Udupi, Aug 2: The district and sessions court has sentenced a couple to life imprisonment finding them guilty of murdering an elderly man at Baradi Darkasumane at Kanthavara under Karkala rural police station limits on September 16, 2011. Judge T Venkatesh Naik pronounced the verdict.
The accused - Shekar Dooja Moolya, 53 and his wife Malathi Shekar Moolya, 47 had fatally assaulted Rama Moolya, 65, resident of Baradi in Kanthavara with the hilt of a pickaxe and sickle.
Public prosecutor Shanti Bai said the couple entered an argument with Rama Moolya and later assaulted him. While Shekar forcibly hit the head and face of Rama Moolya with the hilt, Malathi hit his head with a sickle causing him serious bleeding injuries.
The couple also tied up a severely injured Rama as he bled to death. Then Circle Police Inspector Vijayprasad S who investigated the case filed the chargesheet under sections 302, 342 read with 34 of IPC.
Apart from directing the couple to undergo life imprisonment, the judge also imposed a fine of Rs 5000 on them, which will be paid to next of kin of victim.
