Udupi, Mar 10: A group of activists of Dalit Hitarakshana Samiti staged a protest in front of the Clock Tower here demanding suspension of the sub-inspector attached to Hiriyadka police station for assaulting two youths. The protesters also raised slogans against Superintendent of Police K. Annamalai.

annaspAddressing the protesters, Dejappa Karkera, convener of the samiti, said that on February 20, when the zilla panchayat elections were going on, the sub-inspector attached to Hiriyadka police station, M. Rafeeq, resorted to a lathi-charge to disperse a mob near Munduje Government Higher Primary School.

Kiran, belonging to the Koraga community, a Scheduled Tribe, was working in the house of Sadananda Shetty. He was just watching the events from within Mr. Shetty's compound. But Mr. Rafik dragged him out and thrashed him. As a result of the thrashing, Kiran's hand was fractured and he was admitted to the district government hospital. Though Mr. Karkera complained to SP Annamalai about Mr. Rafeeq's behaviour, Mr. Annamalai defended Mr. Rafik.

On February 22, Mr. Rafeeq stopped K. Sudarshan, another youth belonging to the Scheduled Castes, who was riding his motorcycle near Guddeangady and assaulted him for not wearing his helmet. Here too, Mr. Sudarshan could have been warned. Later, Mr. Sudarshan too was admitted to the government hospital for treatment.

The samiti had also not been given permission to stage a protest outside the SP office on Wednesday. “The government should not only suspend both Mr. Rafeeq and Mr. Annamalai, but also provide adequate compensation to both Mr. Kiran and Mr. Sudarshan.

“If no action is taken in 10 days, we will intensify our agitation,” Mr. Karkera said.

Meanwhile, in a press release issued here, Mr. Annamalai denied the charges made by Mr. Karkera. Mr. Rafik had to disperse the crowd as they were within 100 metres of the polling station. He had visited Mr. Kiran in the hospital. A case had been registered against Mr. Rafik and was being enquired by Kundapur Circle Police Inspector.

Mr. Sudarshan was driving recklessly on his motorcycle and speaking on a mobile telephone. The issue related to Mr. Sudarshan was being enquired by Udupi Circle Police Inspector.

There was a case against Mr. Karkera at Hiriyadka police station being probed by Mr. Rafeeq. Mr. Karkera was trying to mislead the people. He was protesting against Mr. Annamalai because he had not been given permission to stage dharna in front of the SP office, the release added.

Good that Inspector stopped him while recklessly bike riding and using mobile phone , otherwise he would have dead and killed someone else. First he should thank Inspector.
If he is Dalit means he can do whatever he want??

Annamalai is a such person who does not talk anything unless he is hundred percent sure.

May 6: Congress general secretary KC Venugopal on Tuesday termed as "inhumane" the government's decision to "impose excessive costs" on NRIs and expatriates for bringing them into the country from COVID-19-affected nations.

He demanded that the central government fly in the poor and vulnerable free of cost while charge the others with normal fares instead of high costs.

"The central government's decision to impose excessive costs on NRIs flying in special flights from the Covid-affected countries is an inhumane act," he said in a statement.

Venugopal said it was due to protests by a large number of expatriates and their relatives as well as the general public over the past few days that the central government took the decision to bring back Indian citizens from abroad.

"However, it is cruel that the Central government has taken advantage of this plight of expatriates by increasing the price of air fares up to three times. This is inhumane," Venugopal said in his statement.

He urged the Centre to take urgent steps to provide free travel to the most vulnerable, unemployed, sick and pregnant women and to others on normal fare.

Air India will operate 64 repatriation flights for a week from May 7 while the Navy deployed two ships as India rolled out a massive evacuation plan on Tuesday to bring back thousands of its nationals stranded abroad due to the coronavirus-triggered lockdown.

Those availing the repatriation flights will be charged, Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri told a virtual press conference in New Delhi. A passenger on a London-Delhi flight will be charged Rs 50,000 and on a Dhaka-Delhi flight Rs 12,000, he added.

From the Gulf countries to Malaysia and the UK to the US, the multi-agency operation christened 'Vande Bharat Mission' will see the state-owned airline operate the non-scheduled commercial flights till May 13 to ferry around 15,000 Indian nationals from 12 countries.

Bengaluru, Jan 8: The Karnataka high court on Tuesday directed the government to submit steps taken in respect of the order of Lokyukta in relation to the Kethaganahalli landgrab case involving former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy, his relatives and former minister DC Thammanna.

A division bench headed by Chief Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka gave the direction on a PIL filed by Samaj Parivartan Samudaya (SPS), an NGO. The petitioner said despite an order from the Lokayukta on August 5, 2014, to take action within 15 days, no action has been initiated till date in respect of encroachment of a huge tract of land in Kethaganahalli along Bengaluru-Mysuru highway.

SPS says the land was purchased in 1979 contrary to norms of Karnataka Land Revenue Act. It claims Kumaraswamy and others paid only Rs 5,000 per acre, although the prevailing market rate was Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 per acre.

Bengaluru, Feb 29: Dreaded underworld don Ravi Poojary's lawyer Dilraj has allegedly been kept out of hearing distance and as a mute spectator during interrogation by the police.

"The lawyer is a mute spectator out of hearing distance from the interrogation. He is not privy to what police ask Pujari," a source told media.

As directed by the court and requested by Poojary, Dilraj is allowed to be present near the interrogation for him to consult on legal issues, but the cops have made sure that he does not hear anything for fear of leaking information.

The court has also ordered the interrogation to be video graphed, which the police are carrying out.

Police sources said that Ravi Poojary is relaxed and cool during the multi-lingual interrogation.

"He is cool, giving frank replies. Poojary is exhibiting confidence in whatever he is telling. Maybe confidently lying, police are not new to him," said the source.

According to source, the gangster knows how to handle police, with sufficient knowledge to reveal how much he wants to, when to stop, when to talk, when to mislead and plant false information.

"Poojary is being interrogated in his mother tongue Kannada, Hindi and English. He is fluent in English," the source said.

However, the source denied speculation gaining currency that Poojary requested police not to send him to Mumbai fearing of being eliminated by the henchmen of dreaded underworld dons Dawood Ibrahim and Chota Rajan.

"Nothing of that sort happened. It doesn't work like that. He has been captured after 25 years, and he is not a king to choose. Wherever the law takes him, he will go there," said the source.

Rajan is serving a life sentence inside a high security cell in Delhi's Tihar jail.

Currently, the probe is focused on Tilknagar Shabnam Developers double murder shootout case. Police are discovering information, verifying it with respect to evidence and building the case.

Taking regular breaks, police are interrogating Poojary from morning till evening.

Of the over 200 cases against Poojary in the southern state, 39 are in Bengaluru, 36 at Mangaluru, 11 in Udupi on the state's west coast and one each at Mysuru, Hubballi-Dharwad, Kolar and Shivamogga in Malnad.

The other cases are in Mumbai (49) and in Gujarat (75) pertaining to extortion, kidnapping, ransom demand and murder threats.

Poojary also extorted huge amounts from popular Bollywood stars and realtors. He was also involved in an attempt to murder case, aimed at killing a prominent lawyer of Mumbai.

A four-member Karnataka police team led by Pandey brought the 52-year-old underworld don to Bengaluru from Dakar in Senegal via Paris in an Air France scheduled flight during the wee hours and kept him at an interrogation centre in the city's south-east suburb.
