Udupi, Jul 18: Two persons have been arrested by the police for allegedly cheating the Innanje Cooperative Agricultural Bank to the tune of Rs 64 lakh at Innanje village in Udupi district.padubelleaccused

It may recalled that Shankar Acharya (50), his wife Nirmala Acharya (45), their daughters, Shruthi Acharya (24), an MBA graduate, and Shreya Acharya (21), an MCA student, had allegedly committed suicide in their house in Padubelle on the morning of July 13. Shankar Acharya owned a jewellery shop in Padubelle.

K.T. Balakrishna, Superintendent of Police, said that the cops had arrested two persons – Umesh Amin, Manager of the Bank, and Umesh Acharya, gold ornaments appraiser of the bank – for colluding with Shankar Acharya and cheating the bank.

Shankar Acharya had deposited 2.7 kilograms gold ornaments with the bank in 92 transactions, and had taken loans to the tune of Rs. 64 lakh on these ornaments.

On examination, the bank found that except for 150 grams of gold, the rest were silver ornaments for which gold plating had been given.

Shankar Acharya got information about this on the afternoon of July 12. “Hence, the fear that this scam would get exposed might have prompted him to take the extreme step of suicide on the morning of July 13. But this would have to be established by investigations. Whether he poisoned his family members or it was a joint action too needed to be investigated,” Mr. Balakrishna said.

A case has been registered against Amin and Umesh Acharya based on a complaint given by the managing director of the bank.

Based on the complaint, both were arrested and produced before the court here, which remanded both in judicial custody for 14 days, Mr. Balakrishna said.

Bengaluru, Jan 22: Karnataka home minister Basavaraj Bommai today refused to respond when a journalist asked him why Aditya Rao, who was arrested on charge of planting bomb at Mangaluru International Airport, can’t be called a terrorist.

Responding to another query of another journalist on the sidelines of a private program, here, Mr Bommai said all airports in the state would soon have bomb disposal squads.

"After the Mangaluru airport bomb incident, a thought has been given to establishing bomb disposal squads near airports in the state. Hubballi and Kalburgi airports too will have them," he said.

He said, Aditya Rao resident of Udupi who has been in a frustrated state for not getting employment and earlier too arrested for hoax calls surrendered at the DGP office in Bengaluru on Wednesday. The Mangaluru police will take him into custody for investigations, he added.

Despite the suspect surrendering to the police, investigations into the case will continue, he said.

He further added, 'Irrespective of the organisations the accused belongs to, he will be punished.”

Explosives used in the Mangaluru airport bomb have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis and investigation. National Security Guards too were collecting details, he stated.

He then went on to slam Opposition parties over Mangaluru Airport bomb incident. “State police, on getting information about the suspected bag, had acted swiftly and diffused it. The opposition has resorted to politics and using the incident to appease minorities,” he said.
