Udupi: Fishermen’s protest at Malpe Fisheries Harbour snowballs into clash

Udupi, Mar 6: A clash erupted in front of the Fisheries Department Office at the Malpe Fisheries Harbour here yesterday between the fishermen operating deep sea trawl boats and the fishermen operating purse seine boats.

The deep sea trawl boat fishermen were staging a protest in front of the Fisheries Department Office after closing the gate of the harbour.

They were protesting against what they termed unscientific fishing practices, including fishing using lights by the purse seine boat fishermen.

In the meantime, the purse seine boat fishermen came there objected to the closure of the gate to the harbour. This led to heated arguments between leaders of the two groups and there were scuffles between the two groups.

The police then intervened and brought the situation under control. There were then heated arguments between the police and the purse seine fishermen.

Meanwhile, the deep sea trawl boat fishermen took Deputy Director of Fisheries Parshwanath to task. They charged him with not taking action against purse seine boats which were violating the rules.

Deputy Superintendent of Police T.R. Jaishankar urged the fishermen of both the groups to solve their problems within the ambit of their own associations. But the fishermen got angry and shouted slogans against the police. Mr. Jaishankar warned them of action if they breached the law.

Meanwhile, speaking to presspersons, Mr. Parshwanath said that diesel supply to 47 purse seine boats had been stopped for violating rules regarding fishing. The generators from 12 boats had been removed, he said.

Bengaluru, Feb 6: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa said that portfolios for the 10 new ministers who sworn in on Thursday will be allocated by February 8.

Speaking to media persons, he said that he will go to Delhi in the coming days and the date of his visit will be finalised soon.

He is expected to meet the high command again to finalise the list of BJP MLAs for three berths in the Cabinet.

Mangaluru, Jun 15: A father and his four-year-old son were killed when their motorcycle was hit by a lorry from behind at Bakampady junction on the outskirts of the city.

The Police said the deceased has been identified as Abdul Bhasheer, a resident of Krishnapura and his son Shayan. 

On Sunday evening, Bahseer was going from Mangaluru to Krishnapura by the motorcycle along with wife and son when a speeding lorry "dashed into the motorcycle from behind and knocked them down''.

The four-year-old son died on the spot while Basher and his wife were rushed to the hospital. However, the husband succumbed to injuries at the hospital on Monday. Local police registered a case in this connection.

Udupi, May 31: As many as 10 people have been tested positive for coronavirus in Udupi district today. 

The district has registered a total of 187 positive cases so far. Majority of the positive cases in Udupi district have inter-state travel history to Maharashtra.

Meanwhile, 14 people including three children who recovered from COVID -19 discharged from Government Hospital in Kundapura, in Udupi district.

Kundapura AC Raju, DHO Dr Sudhirchandra Sooda, taluk medical officer Dr Nagabhushan Udupa handed over a rose to all the discharged. With this, a total of 64 persons have been recovered and discharged in the district.
