Mangaluru/ Udupi, May 16: As expected Dakshina Kannada has further improved its position in the SSLC examination this year by scaling to the third position from eighth position last year.

girlsHowever, the overall pass percentage in Dakshina Kannada has slipped from 89.35 in 2015 to 88.01 in 2016. Compared to previous years, most of the districts in Karnataka this year have witnessed a decline in pass percentage.

This year the district administration intended to see the Dakshina Kannada among the top three good performing districts in the state. Experts feel that efforts put in to improve performance on slow learners in the coastal district have shown the results. The district was in the 29th position in the State in 2014, 26th in 2013 and seventh in 2012.

Teachers in the district, which is known as a hub of education, were concerned to see a reduction in the number of students clearing SSLC exam in the last few years.

Several measures were initiated to improve the pass percentage in the district. Ahead of this year's exam, special classes were conducted for slow learners throughout the year. Night classes were held this year too in March.

Legislators, panchayat members and religious leaders had also visited the houses of students to learn their preparation and also to boost their morale.

Udupi loses top position

Meanwhile, Udupi district, which had bagged first position in 2015 with a pass percentage of 93.37, lost the competition to Bengaluru Rural in 2016. This year Udupi has recorded 89.52 pass percentage.

In 2014 Udupi district had slipped to the 16th place with 85.36 pass percentage. Traditionally, for a district that has done well, slumping down to 16th place was a shock for the department, which came up with a clear-cut strategy at the beginning of the last academic year to overcome it.

Accordingly, the department called for a meeting of headmasters and teachers and had a brain-storming session with them and chalked out an action plan, which was implemented right away in 2015. Special focus was on students in rural areas, who were seen to be spending too much time watching television. However, this year Bengaluru Rural overtook Udupi with 89.63% results.

Bengaluru, Jun 29: A 99-year-old woman has successfully recovered from coronavirus in Bengaluru, leaving the medical fraternity and her family elated.

The woman had contracted the pathogen after coming in contact with her grandson and was hospitalised on her 99th birthday on June 18.

The woman was taken to the government Victoria Hospital along with her 70-year-old son, daughter-in-law and grandson.

"While we three developed symptoms like cold, cough and fever, my mother remained asymptomatic," the woman's son said.

The family members are still wondering how they got infected by the virus as all except the woman's grandson, were confined to their home most of the time.

Her 29-year-old grandson was the only one who went out to buy groceries.

Initially, the family approached a private hospital nearby for treatment, but they refused to accept COVID-19 patients.

Left with no option, the family got admitted to the Victoria hospital.

"We had reservations about Victoria hospital, but it turned out be a good one.

We did not spend a penny since the day we were admitted and my mother and son fully recovered," the woman's son said.

According to Dr Asima Banu, nodal officer of the Trauma Care Centre at the Victoria hospital, the woman was reluctant to get treatment at the hospital.

"With moral support from doctors and nurses at the Trauma Care Centre, she recovered very fast. She is always positive in life," the doctor said.
