Udupi: Newlywed among two fishermen drown as giant waves hit fishing boat

Udupi, Jul 25: Two young fishermen lost their lives when monstrous waves toppled their fishing boat in Arabian Sea off Malpe Padukere beach in Udupi district today.

The deceased have been identified as Nithesh (29) and Nishanth (22), both residents of Udupi district. A resident of Udyavara Pitrodi, Nitesh had recently entered marital life.

The tragedy took place when the duo along with other fishermen were returning to the shore in their boat.

At least five fishermen were swept away by a giant wave. Three among them managed to rescue themselves. Two went missing in the incident. 

After half an hour the dead body of Nitesh was retrieved. Local swimmers, fishermen, fire personnel and coastal guard are searching for missing Nishant in the sea.

A case has been registered at jurisdictional Malpe police station.

Kasaragod, Apr 6: Even as the number of positive cases of Novel Coronovirus is on increase in this district, the ten-member medical team from Thiruvananthapuram on Monday will inspect and review modalities to convert the proposed Kasaragod medical college into a COVID-19 hospital.

Given the constraints being faced by the district hospital in Kanhangad near here, the 200-beded Kasaragod medical college hospital in Ukkinada near here would be equipped to cater to the Covid-19 patients on isolation.

The ten member medical experts who reached here late on Sunday, are on a special mission to immediately equip the hospital as to convert it as a Covid-19 centre.

Mandya, Jul 23: Upset over contracting Covid 19, a 55-year-old man, ended his life by hanging himself, at the designated Covid hospital, in Mandya, on Wednesday night.

The deceased patient is from Kandegala village, Malvalli taluk, Mandya district. He was ailing from renal problems and was under treatment. 

However, he contracted the virus and tested positive for Covid-19. Upset over this, he ended his life by hanging himself on the window grill, in the hospital bathroom, midnight. The incident came to light when other patients went to the toilet.

His last rites were conducted as per the designated Covid-19 protocol, on Thursday, said District Health Officer Dr H P Manchegowda.

Mangaluru, Mar 29: Dakshina Kannada Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union Limited in a statement announced that their milk collection centres across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts will be closed on March 29 and 30.

Due to a shortage of storage space with them, the Union has decided to stop collecting milk on these two days, according to the statement issued here on Saturday.

The sale/retail of milk and milk products won’t be affected in these two days.
