Mr. Vemula allegedly committed suicide on January 17, a fortnight after he was expelled from his hostel, along with four researchers by the University authorities. The five Dalit students of Ambedkar Students Association (ASA) were on a sleep-in strike on the campus since their expulsion.

Addressing protestors here, Suresh B.P., leader of Bahujan Vidyarthi Sangha, said that the death of Vemula was due to his expulsion by the university authorities.

It was the inhuman attitude of the administration of the university, which had led to the unnatural death. The entire administration of the University was responsible for it, he said.

Jayan Malpe, convener of district unit of Karnataka Dalit Sangharsh Samiti, said that the death of Mr. Vemula showed that casteism was still rampant in the society. The harsh action of expulsion showed the callous attitude of the University towards the Dalits.

The mindset of some persons was such that they did not want Dalits to get higher education.

Mr. Vemula came from a humble background as his mother was a farm worker. Some Hindu seers always asserted that there was no casteism in Hindu society. “If the death of Mr. Vemula is not a result of casteism, what is it? The atrocities on Dalits have not ceased in the country, no matter how much claims of development the Union government makes” Mr. Malpe said.

Bengaluru, Feb 14: Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker Vishvesha Hegde Kageri on Friday announced continuation of ban on private TV channels from live coverage of the Budget Session being held this Month and next month.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr Kageri said that the ban was imposed on the lines of practice in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha in the Parliament. Private channels will not be allowed to cover live on going session instead they will be provided with clippings by the concerned Department as was done during the previous Session.

For the first time in the history the BJP government, which had come to power for the second time in the state last year after pulling down Congress-JDS coalition government, had banned live coverage of the session by private channels and despite Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa's appeal the ban was not lifted.

Bengaluru, Jun 7: A mobile app and a portal offering technology-driven solutions to manage and mitigate floods in urban areas were launched here on Saturday by Karnataka Revenue Minister R Ashoka.

The mobile app 'Bengaluru Megha Sandesha' was developed to disseminate information on rainfall and flood forecast, location-specific dynamic weather directly to the public. "The in-built features of the app and the information provided for a city is the first of its kind in the country," a press release said. This is a system of providing rainfall, flood forecasts and early warning to the officials of government agencies in the city through SMS to their mobile phones, social media platforms and a dedicated web portal, the release said.

The information provided would help the civic authorities act in advance and manage the floods, it said. The portal 'Varunamitra' is for information on the weather. The information provided is based on real-time data from 100 telemetric rain gauges installed and maintained at various locations across the state, it said. Rainfall forecast is based on the weather research and forecast models developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Ahmedabad, the release said.

The information on flood forecast is based on the hydrological model, hydraulic routing and automation of the results. The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, along with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), took up this project on the urban flood model for Bengaluru city. The project was funded by the Central government's department of science and technology, the release added.
