Udupi, Aug 19: Two days after Praveen Poojary, a BJP?worker, was killed by miscreants belonging to Hindu Jagarana Vedike and other Hindutva outfits while transporting cattle on Wednesday, the family of the victim has denied the charge that he was involved in cattle trafficking.

Prameela Poojary, the sister of the Praveen, told media persons on Friday that her brother was never involved in cattle trafficking. “If that was the case, we would have been rich years ago itself. The people whom he believed stabbed him in the back,” she said. She claimed that the people who did not tolerate her brother's popularity in the village were behind his murder.

Praveen's father Vasu Poojary said that his (Praveen's)?friends were the main culprits. “He trusted people too much. They cheated him,” he said.

Udupi district BJP?president Matter Ratnakar Hegde said he personally believed that Praveen had been murdered for “personal reasons.”?Former district BJP president, Tingalay Vikramarjuna Hegde, said that the murder had nothing do with the party. He said that people who brand themselves as cattle protectors were no way connected with the party.

Superintendent of Police K?T?Balakrishna said that according to the preliminary investigation, Poojary was killed over cattle trafficking. “The suspects claim that they murdered Poojary as he was transporting cattle. But, it is yet to be ascertained whether the he was done to death owing to personal enmity,” the SP?said.

Poojary, 29, was bludgeoned to death by a gang while transporting cattle in his mini truck under the limits of Hebri police station in Udupi district on Wednesdaynight. His friend, Akshay Devadiga, was injured in the murderous attack and he is under treatment in a private hospital in Brahmavar.

Akshay Devadiga, who spoke to media persons, said that a gang of around 25 men attacked him and Praveen with iron rods when the vehicle by which they were transporting calves stopped near Muddur. Ramesh, the person who had hired the vehicle, fled the spot as soon as the gang struck them, Devadiga said.

“We were dumped along with the calves in the truck. I lost consciousness after the attack and when I regained senses, I?heard Praveen screaming for water. The assailants told him to drink rain water and die. Later, some local people, who arrived at the spot, threw a water bottle at him. I put a few drops of water into his mouth. The police shifted us to a hospital,” he recalled.

18 remanded to judicial custody

A local court in Udupi has remanded 18 suspects arrested on Thursday in connection with the murder in judicial custody till August 30. The other seven suspects, who were produced before the magistrate at his house on Friday evening, were sent to judicial custody till August 31.

Chithradurga, Mar 25: COVID-19-positive cases in Karnataka jumped to 42 from 33 on Tuesday, with nine cases added to the list overnight. The daughter of G M Siddeshwara, Davanagere MP, is the latest case.

Sources from the Siddeshwara family said that the MP’s daughter, along with her two children, who started from Guyana, first landed at New York airport and from there, she took a flight to New Delhi.

From Delhi, she flew to Bengaluru. And then, she and her children travelled with her father in a chaffeur-driven car on March 21 to their house in Bheemasamudra.

Siddeshwara said that protocol for COVID-19 had been followed and all who returned were under self-quarantine at his house. However, the administration was not informed of her travel history till the samples were given for test, Chitradurga Deputy Commissioner Vinoth Priya R told TNIE. The DC said the test results of the MP’s daughter were collected by district health authorities and sent to Shivamogga Institute of Medical Sciences on March 22.

The test turned out to be positive for COVID-19 and she was shifted to the isolation ward at Chigateri district hospital in Davanagere. This is the first positive case in Chitradurga. The patient, who is the wife of an Indian Diplomat in Guyana, complained of flu-like symptoms and remained self-quarantined at her house at Bheemasamudra. Her condition was informed to the health department, which collected her samples and forwarded it to the SIMS for tests, results of which arrived on Tuesday evening.

The DC said that samples of family members including the two children, and those working at the MP’s house would be collected and sent for testing to ensure proper protocol is followed. The administration has declared a ‘red zone of a 5km radius around Siddeshwara’s house at Bheemasamudra. DHO Dr Palaksha said that the patient is not suffering any serious problems and is normal. However, we have put her in the isolation ward of Chigateri District Hospital in Davangere, he said.

Chennai, July 25: A widow living alone in her apartment in Chennai city suburbs has filed a police complaint against ABVP national president Dr Subbiah Shanmugam, accusing him of harassment, including urinating and throwing used surgical masks at her doorstep.

Shockingly, no action has been taken so far by the police, even though the complaint against Dr Shanmugam, who is in government service, was filed on July 11 at the Adambakkam Police Station here by the widow’s relative Balaji Vijayaraghavan.

Dr Shanmugam and the 62-year-old widow were living in the same apartment complex in Nanganallur and an argument broke between them over a parking slot. “He wanted to use our parking lot. We agreed but demanded a nominal charge for using it. He was outraged by our demand and even broke our signboard at the parking lot,” Vijayaraghavan wrote in his complaint.

He also alleged that Dr Shanmugam began harassing her by throwing “pieces of chicken” outside her apartment despite knowing she is a vegetarian. Vijayaraghavan also alleged in his two-page written complaint that the ABVP National President had urinated outside the woman’s apartment gate and had been throwing garbage and used masks at her gate.

The 62-year-old woman has been living alone in her apartment for the last year following her husband’s death. In his complaint, Vijayaraghavan also said the family was “concerned about her safety”, while asking police to take action against Dr Shanmugam, who he says, “has a bad track record in maintaining rapport with neighbours.”

CCTV footage corroborates with the allegations of urinating outside the residence of the widow. However, the ABVP claimed the incident as a “malicious and derogatory propaganda” by the Congress’ student wing of NSUI.
