Udupi: Speeding bus rams into scooter, kills award winning teacher

Udupi, Oct 17: An elderly man lost his life when a speeding bus rammed into his scooter near MGM College in Udupi on Tuesday.

The deceased had been identified as Peter Raphael Aranha, 64, a resident of Moodubelle. He was riding from Moodubelle to Doddanaguddeand taking a turn near MGM College, when a private bus moving from Manipal to Mangaluru hit his scooter.

Aranha was rushed to a private hospital in Manipal, where he succumbed to his injuries. Rash driving by the bus driver is said to be the cause. A case has been registered.

Aranha had retired as a teacher. He was the recipient of Best Teacher Award. He was also a social worker.

Mangalore, Jan 12: City police on Sunday arrested five people for their alleged involvement in a Rs 50 crore fraud by promising people higher monetary returns.

Police said that the arrested persons are Manjunath Nayak, a resident of Derebail; Denzil Mascarenhas, a Konchady resident; Ashok Naik, a Derebail resident; Vikas Nayak and Vishwanath Naik both residents of Bengaluru were arrested.

The arrested were employed in the ‘Speak and Group’ concern, started by Dhanush M K of Kundapur along with his friends. The firm had managed to collect huge sums of money from people, including NRIs by promising monthly four percent returns on their investment. The employees managed to entice people by showing them a few insurance schemes claiming higher returns.

Udupi, Jan 25: The accused, who planted a crude bomb at the Mangalore International Airport on January 20, was brought to Udupi on Saturday, to collect information, as part of the spot investigation, police said here.

According to police officials, accused Aditya Rao was brought to Karnataka Bank Kadiyali branch, where Rao had a Safe Locker. The team opened the locker and seized the documents, along with a Box.

They said the seized documents, along with the Box, will be sent to the FSL for investigation.

Tumuku, Jul 6: Senior Congress leader and Kunigal MLA Dr H D Ranganathm tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday.

The 48-year-old Congress legislature, a doctor by himself, was admitted to Manipal hospital and recovering, he said in a tweet.

Dr Ranganath said he took all precautions, yet could not save himself from the virus and advice people to not to take the contagion lightly.
