Udupi, Sep 6: Thousands of people took part in the procession of the Sri Krishna Leelotsava, popularly called the Vittal Pindi festival, on Car Street here on Sunday.

The procession started from the entrance of the Sri Krishna Mutt/Temple at around 3 p.m. Vidyavallabha Tirtha Swami of Paryaya Kaniyur Mutt installed a clay idol, ‘utsava murthy’, of Lord Krishna on the top of the golden chariot.

The idols of Lord Ananteshwara and Lord Chandramouleshwara were placed in the ‘Navaratna Ratha’ ahead of the golden chariot.

These chariots were pulled around Car Street with traditional drum beaters and ‘Huli Vesha’ dancers accompanying them. Vidyavallabha Tirtha, Vidyasagara Tirtha of Krishnapur Mutt and Lakshmivara Tirtha Swami of Shiroor Mutt walked between the two chariots.

There were a large number of people behind and in front of the chariots.

But the main highlight of the festival was mosaru kudike or breaking of earthen pots.

As many as 15 wooden gopuras were constructed around Car Street. As soon as the procession reached a gopura, a person would climb atop it and hang pots containing milk and milk products.

A group of persons dressed in folk costumes would stand below the gopura with long sticks and jostle with one another to break the earthen pots (with the sticks). This process was repeated at all the wooden gopuras.

People applauded them whenever they broke the earthen pots. Mosaru kudike here is different from those arranged at other places, where human pyramids are formed to break earthen pots hung above.

Then, Vidyavallabha Tirtha distributed ladoos and chakkulis at a stage put up near the Ananteshwara Temple Cross Road. Another feature of the festival was the enthusiastic participation of the Huli Vesha groups.

Their vigorous and spirited dancing enlivened the atmosphere.

What caught everyone’s eye was a Huli Vesha dancer dancing on two wooden bars held above the ground by members of his group. Some Yakshagana dancers also displayed their dancing skills during the procession.

After going around the Car Street, the procession culminated at the entrance of the Sri Krishna Mutt/Temple. The clay idol of Lord Krishna was removed from the golden chariot and taken in a golden palanquin and immersed in the Madhwa Sarovara, marking the culmination of the festival.

Bengaluru, Mar 7: As a precautionary measure to control the spread of coronavirus in Karnataka, the state government has planned to suspend biometric attendance for the time-being at its offices, also in corporate and IT companies, Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar said on Saturday.

He said the government has taken all precautionary measures to control the spread of the virus in the state.

"Our Additional Chief Secretary has already spoken to IT companies yesterday on behalf of the government regarding guidelines that need to be followed, it is part of it...we will do it in the government also in the days to come," Sudhakar told reporters here.

He was responding to a question about suspending biometric attendance at offices in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

Asked about suspending biometric attendanceat government offices, he said, "we have planned to do it yesterday."

Sudhakar said so far in Karnataka not even one case has been identified, to that extent we have been taking precautionary measures effectively.

He said from villages to state capital Bengaluru at all levels the health department officials have been activated as part of the precautionary measures.

Also, committees headed by Deputy Commissioners have been formed in all district, he added.

"We have given certain guidelines to people. We have also included private hospitals. We have taken all precautionary measures to stop the virus from entering the state," he added.

In response to a question regarding masks, the Minister clarified that those who have the symptoms of the disease only should use them.

He said, "N95 masks are required only for those who have tested positive, there is not even a single positive case in the state so far...surgical masks that will have three layers can be used by those who have symptoms like cough, cold, fever."

In the state as a precautionary measure 2,500 beds have been kept ready if the situation arises, despite not having a single case.

Bengaluru, Mar 27: Oncologist Dr. Vishal Rao, HCG Hospital Bengaluru on Friday said that human body cells release interferon chemical to kill viruses but it cannot be released by cells in the case of COVID-19 cases, leading to weak immune system. However, a therapy of specific concoction could be useful in treating COVID-19 patients.

"We got hold of some preprint suggesting that interferon is effective in COVID19," said Rao.

Speaking to news agency, he continued saying "When we withdraw blood for regular check-ups, we get buffy coat which can be used to take out cells and form interferon. These two chemicals and some other cytokines, in a specific concoction, could be potentially very useful in treating COVID-19 patients."

Rao said that they have built a concoction of cytokines which can be injected to reactivate immune system in COVID-19 patients.

"We are in a very initial stage and hope to be ready with its first set by this weekend. We have applied to the governement for an expedited review. We have also presented this before the state government" said Rao.

"We have a team of infection specialist, ICU team and other...all of us have worked together to build something that we believe. We want to serve the society at this hour of need," he added.

Dr Rao clarified that this is not a vaccine and this particular interferon therapy does not help to prevent the infection of COVID-19. However, this is focused and targeted towards COVID-19 positive patients or those who have just incubated the virus.

"We believe that in early stages as well as the patients who have just incubated, this particular therapy of interferon gama and other concoction of cytokines could be an effective method. In the late stages we are looking at specific dosage of the cells which are our own body cells which can actually be affective and could also be of use for the ventilator patients," he added.

Meanwhile, Dr Gururaj, Immunologist and Scientist told ANI that they are trying to cover two aspects, one is the early stage patients where they are trying to improve their immune systems.

"As Dr Vishal said, we are trying to see whether we can use the cytokines from our own immune cells which is a natural process but it is hampered in infected patients," said Dr Gururaj.

"In the last phase we are using cells which are used from the bone marrow of the patient or donors. We can use those cells to reduce the inflation and so called cytokines release syndrome which is basically the inflammatory response of the body," he added.
