Udupi, Dec 22: An elephant and two leopards have been found dead near Karkala in Udupi district. While the wild elephant lost its life after accidentally falling into a pit, the leopards are believed to have died of starvation.
According to Karkala Range Forest Officer Dinesh, the leopard carcasses were found on Wednesday and the elephant carcass was found on Thursday.
“An autopsy revealed only grass in the leopard’s stomach. If it had eaten something, there would have been some traces of the food. But in this case, there were no traces," he said. However, he said, there could be other reasons for the collapse. The officer said the cub may have been accidentally separated from its mother.
The other leopard, aged around a year, according to the RFO, also died due to starvation. Its carcass was found on government land in Erlappadi.
The five-year-old elephant was found dead in a pit near Neera area. Its trunk was pressed against the wall of the pit dug for agricultural purposes.
According to experts, after falling into the pit, the elephant went into trauma as it became immovable and it either suffered a heart attack or died because of asphyxiation.
