Udupi, Jan 18: Vidyadheesha Tirtha Swami, the chief pontiff of Palimar Mutt on Thursday ascended the prestigious ‘Paryaya Peetha’, also called the ‘Sarvajna Peetha’, at the 800-year-old Sri Krishna Mutt/Temple.

The Palimar seer took charge from the outgoing Paryaya seer, Vishwesha Tirtha Swami of Pejawar Mutt, who completed his record fifth Paryaya. For Palimar seer this is the second Paryaya.

The ascension gives Palimar seer the rights to worship Sri Krishna and manage the affairs of the Krishna Math for the next two years.

Pomp and gaiety marked the ascension ceremony. The incoming Paryaya seer went to Danda Tirtha near Kaup, about 12 km from Udupi and took a holy dip there in the wee hours.

He arrived at Jodu Katte here where he was welcomed by a large number of devotees. A grand procession began from Jodu Katte. The procession passed through the Taluk Office Road, Court Road, Diana Circle, Ideal Circle, Tenkapete and culminated at Car Street.

The devotees carried the presiding deity of the Palimar Mutt in a palanquin. The seers of the Astha Mutts, in palanquins, followed the chief deity, with Vidyadheesha Tirtha leading them.

After having a darshan of the idol of Sri Krishna through the Kanakadasa Kindi, the Paryaya seer offered prayers at the Chandramouleshwara and Ananteshwara temples. He then came to the entrance of the Sri Krishna Temple, where he was welcomed by the outgoing Paryaya seer Vishwesha Tirtha.

Both the seers entered the Sri Krishna Mutt/Temple and offered prayers to Sri Krishna and Hanuman. Then outgoing Paryaya seer handed over the Akshaya Patra and Sattuga (vessel and ladle dating back to the times of Sri Madhwacharya) and the keys to the sanctum sanctorum to the new seer, marking the formal transfer of authority from one mutt to another.

Bengaluru, Jan 13: Though he submitted his resignation as leader of the opposition over a month ago, former chief minister Siddaramaiah continues as the face of the Congress in Karnataka.

However, this may change as All India Congress Committee (AICC) interim president Sonia Gandhi has summoned Siddaramaiah to Delhi for a final consultation over change of guard. Over the past month, there has been speculation over the possibility of Congress persisting with Siddaramaiah as opposition leader and either party troubleshooter DK Shivakumar or former ministers MB Patil, HK Patil or Eshwar Khandre replacing incumbent president Dinesh Gundu Rao. Both tendered resignations owing moral responsibility for the party's dismal performance in the 15 bypolls held last month.

In the past 24 hours, there has been talk of Siddaramaiah being asked to be the state unit president and vacating the other post for a young turk or experience legislator including the likes of Shivakumar who could be the face of KPCC by 2023 if he gets a clean chit from the ED in cases of money-laundering, etc. Seniors, including former KPCC president and DyCM G Parameswara and former minister HK Patil, are strong contenders to be leader of the opposition if Siddaramaiah is asked to vacate the post.

However, sources in the Siddaramaiah camp dismissed the possibility of him becoming KPCC president. "He has never aspired for the post and the high command is not inclined to do it," said a member in his camp.

Siddaramaiah may meet Sonia on Tuesday morning. It's still unclear if any other KPCC functionaries have been summoned. Sources said Sonia is scheduled to leave India for medical treatment on January 15 and wanted to complete the consultations about Karnataka. The high command has reportedly gone through reports submitted by party observers Madhusudan Mistry and Parameswara.

Mangaluru, Apr 19: District-in-charge Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary said that Rs 2000 each has been deposited in the bank accounts of 6,122 construction workers, who are registered with the labour department in the Dakshina Kannada district. The amount will be deposited in the accounts of other registered construction workers at the earliest.

The state government had announced Rs 2000 to construction labourers who are registered and have lost their livelihood due to the on-going nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of the coronavirus. The curbs, which were imposed on March 24, have been extended till May 3. "The labourers were reeling under hardship after construction activities came to a halt," said the Minister.

Supply food

Local bodies should make arrangements to supply food for stranded labourers, destitutes and beggars in all the ULBs in Dakshina Kannada district, Poojary said.

"No one should starve during the lockdown period. All the ULBs should identify destitutes, migrant labourers in their jurisdiction and arrange food for them. In case of necessity, the help of NGOs can also be taken," he added
The minister announced that Asha workers and health workers would collect information on people's health by visiting the houses in the district and submit a report within 10 days.
