Udupi, Mar 17: A large number of women took out a rally from Peramapalli Circle to the Deputy Commissioner's Office in Udupi, urging the Karnataka government not to permit any more liquor shops in the State.

The rally was jointly organised by the district units of Zilla Janajagriti Vedike and Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP).

The protesters held placards with messages including “Chief Minister, Do not fall into the trap of liquor barons,” “Do not permit new liquor shops,” “Do not bow to the liquor lobby,” “Chief Minister, Do not make people to shed their tears” and “Down with liquor lobby.”

Devadas Hebbar, leader of the district unit of the Vedike, said that there were reports that the State government was planning to allow the opening of 1,500 liquor shops in the State for resource mobilisation in its forthcoming budget for 2016-17. Recently, the government had permitted the opening of 9,600 liquor shops. Of these 9,600 establishments, 3,950 were wine shops.

The government would do well to study the social impact of its decision. This decision would only lead to an increase in poverty, exploitation, road accidents and family disputes. In short, it would disturb peace in the society. “We urge the State government to present a pro-people budget with emphasis on health of the people. The government should take pro-active steps to reduce bad habits such as alcoholism,” he said.

B. Appanna Hegde, former MLA, said that the Janajagriti Samiti, a sister organisation of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala, was functioning in all 30 districts of the State. It had been working actively in all these districts and creating awareness about the consequences of alcoholism and related vices. It had held several camps for the de-addiction of alcoholics. These programmes had benefited a large number of people including students.

“The decision to open more liquor shops has come as a rude shock to every right thinking person, especially women and children, and those who have come out of alcoholism,” he said.

Uma Shetty, Vasanti Madhwaraj, N.A. Ramachandra, Vivek Vincent Pias, Naveen Amin, Nalini, Poornima, and Satyananda Nayak, leaders of the Samiti, were present.

Bengaluru, Feb 22: The Hindu Mahasabha has decided to carry out a 'cleaning ceremony' by using 'gau-mutra' (cow urine) to purify Freedom Park, where pro-Pakistan slogans were shouted as a protest against the CAA, NRC and NRP.

On Thursday, an 18-year-old girl Amulya Leona hadraised slogans of 'Pakistan Zindabad,' after the organisers of the event under the banner of 'Save Constitution' invited her to address the gathering. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi soon rushed and tried to snatch away mic from her hand.

Amulya, who was arrested by the police soon after the event on charges of Sedition, was remanded to 14-day judicial custody.

Associates of Amulya insisted that she was trying to make a point that nobody in the anti-CAA rallies would hail a ‘long Live Pakistan’ slogan while they would do so for a ‘Long Live Hindustan’ chant.

“She is not dumb. She knew exactly what she was saying. She had a clear narrative in mind, but was interrupted before she could complete it. Her half-comments are now being taken out of context,” said Sujnan, another student-activist.

“In the end, the campaign is not involved with whatever she said or intended to say. It falls on her to explain herself,” said a protest organiser.

New Delhi: BJP leader Yogish Gowda, who was a member of the Dharwad Zilla Panchayath in Karnataka, was killed because of "political reasons", the CBI has alleged in its charge sheet filed against eight accused before a Dharwad court, officials said on Thursday.

Mr Gowda was killed on June 15, 2016 in front of a gym in Dharwad.

The charge sheet was filed before the Judicial Magistrate First Class Court in Dharwad against Santosh Savadatti, Dinesh M, Sunil KS, Harshith, Aswath S, Nazeer Ahamad, Shanawaz and Nutan K. All but one are in judicial custody.

"The accused allegedly came to Dharwad on two occasions in June 2016 and with the support of the other accused, allegedly planned the murder of Yogish Gowda. These accused fled after the crime," CBI spokesperson RK Gaur said.

The agency has alleged that the killing had "political reasons" behind it and was a result of political rivalry, the officials said.

The agency had taken over the case on September 24, 2019, nearly three years after the murder, on the request of the BJP government in Karnataka and a referral from the centre.

The case was earlier probed by the Karnataka Police which had charged six people for allegedly planning and executing the killing.

The CBI has arrested eight accused in the case of which seven are in judicial custody, they said.

"Further investigation into the role of the other accused and larger conspiracy in this case is continuing on a day-to-day basis," Mr Gaur said.
