UK councillor seeks ban on holding of Burhan Wani death anniversary rally in Birmingham

London, Apr 3: A British Councillor, Peter Douglas Osborn, has written a letter to Home Secretary Amber Rudd, asking the government to ban a possible rally that could be held in Birmingham in memory of slain Kashmiri terrorist Burhan Wani on his death anniversary on July 8.

"I spent ¾ hour on Channel X, a major Indian TV media channel, with spokesmen from the BJP, Congress party, and other minor parties explaining our weak response as a city to such a provocation. The city allowed, banned, then allowed again under pressure from a small section of the community. I did promise that I would try to get it banned this year which is why I am writing to you. Intelligence suggests that another protest is being planned," says Osborn from Bournville, Birmingham, in his letter dated March 15, 2018.

On July 6, 2017, the Birmingham City Council, on the basis of a strong protest from India, withdrew permission for a rally titled "Burhan Wani Day" that was proposed to be held to mark the first death anniversary of the terrorist who was killed by Indian security forces in the Tral region of Jammu and Kashmir on July, 8, 2016.

Media reports suggest that Indian authorities resorted to sending a "Note Verbale" to the United Kingdom to register the protest. The note highlighted details of crimes committed by Burhan Wani and propagation of violence by him in the Kashmir Valley.

It is believed that permission for the rally was sought by some United Kingdom based organisations that lobby for the cause of Kashmiri separatism. Tehreek-e-Kashmir Europe was believed to be in the forefront for holding the rally.

Promotional material for the event carried images of Burhan Wani and read, "We will take back what is ours forcefully. We will not rest until Kashmir is free from Kuffers and hoist the flag of Islamic Ummah."

Reports of the aforementioned preparations of the rally were carried by section of the Indian media.

In his letter to the Home Secretary, Osborn also highlighted the sensitivity of the Indian media to extremists being lauded in the United Kingdom.

Geneva, May 28: The global death toll from the novel coronavirus has risen over the past 24 hours by 5,581 to 349,095, the World Health Organization (WHO) said in its daily situation report.

The number of confirmed cases has increased by 84,314 to 5,488,825, the WHO said.

Most cases of infection are recorded in the Americas (North and South America) - 2,495,924, with 145,810 deaths. While Europe has reported 2,061,828 cases and 1,76,226 deaths so far.

As per WHO tally, the US has the highest number of cases in the world with 1,63,4010 infections.

The global health body declared the outbreak of the new coronavirus a pandemic on March 11.

Chengdu, China, Jul 27: The American flag was lowered at the United States consulate in Chengdu on Monday, days after Beijing ordered it to close in retaliation for the shuttering of the Chinese consulate in Houston.

Footage on state broadcaster CCTV from outside the consulate showed the flag being slowly lowered early Monday morning, after diplomatic tensions soared between the two powers with both alleging the other had endangered national security.

Relations deteriorated in recent weeks in a Cold War-style standoff, with the Chengdu mission Friday ordered to shut in retaliation for the forced closure of Beijing's consulate in Houston, Texas.

The deadline for the Americans to exit Chengdu has been unclear, but the Chinese consulate in Houston was given 72 hours to close after the original order was made.

On Saturday news agency reporters saw workers removing the US insignia from the front of the consulate.

Over the weekend, removals trucks entered the US consulate and cleaners were seen carting large black rubbish bags from the building.

Beijing says closing the Chengdu consulate was a "legitimate and necessary response to the unreasonable measures by the United States", and has alleged that staff at the diplomatic mission endangered China's security and interests.

Washington officials, meanwhile, said there had been unacceptable efforts by the Chinese consulate in Houston to steal US corporate secrets.

Washington, Jun 2: US President Donald Trump said that peaceful protests following the death of African-American man George Floyd in police custody were derailed by acts of domestic terrorism.

"These are not acts of peaceful protests, these are acts of domestic terror - the destruction of innocent life, and the spilling of innocent blood is an offence to humanity and a crime against God," Trump said during a press briefing on Monday.

Trump also added that the chaos is the work of professional agitators and provocateurs - anarchists and the far-left movement Antifa, among others - and put them on notice, vowing to enforce law and order.

He further said, "Those who threaten innocent life and property will be arrested, detained and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I want the organizers of this terror to be on notice that you will face severe criminal penalties and lengthy sentences in jail. This includes Antifa and others who are leading instigators."

The US president also that he is invoking an 1807 law to mobilize the military around the country to "quickly solve the problem."

"I am also taking swift and decisive action to protect our capital Washington DC. As we speak, I am dispatching thousands and thousands of heavily armed soldier, military personnel and enforcement officers to stop the rioting," Trump said during a press briefing.

"I am mobilizing all available federal resources, civilian and military, to stop the rioting and looting, to end the destruction and arson. And to protect the rights of law-abiding Americans, including your Second Amendment rights," he added.

Trump said mayors and governors must establish an "overwhelming law enforcement presence until the violence has been quelled." If the city or state refuses to take the actions, Trump said he would deploy the US military.

Trump on Monday also said that all Americans are rightly 'sickened by the brutal death' of George Floyd and his administration is fully committed to providing justice to George and his family.

"All Americans were rightly sickened and revolted by the brutal death of George Floyd. My administration is fully committed, the justice will be fully served for George and his family and He will not have died in vain," Trump said.

"My first and highest duty as president is to defend and protect the great country and the American people. I have sworn an oath to uphold the laws of our nation and that is exactly what I will do," he added.

After the media address, Trump made a surprise visit to the damaged St Johns church near White House, walking through park violently cleared of protesters. He walked to the church across the street from the White House after tear gas was fired at protesters in the area.
