Mangalore: Sandy shores of Ullal is all set to provide “2 days of pure chill” when the Ullal beach festival 2012 organised to commemorate silver jubilee celebration of Maruthi Yuvaka Mandala, Ullal is held from November 24. The festival organised on lines of Panambur will encompass dance festival, star evening, beach games, food festival, kite show and sand art. The event is expected to shift the focus of beaches in DK to Ullal this time round.

The dance festival is expected to see some of the leading dance troupes from the districts, and some of which have already showcased their wares at television reality shows to perform on stage. The organisers expect the average footfall on Ullal beach during these competitions to be around 20,000 people. Dance teams will have to make their way through preliminaries and pre-qualifying rounds to earn the right to be part of the dance festival.

Deputy Commissioner NS Channappa Gowda who released the brochure of the beach festival here admitted there has not been much of official success in promoting tourism in the district despite concerted efforts to do so. Acknowledging the need for private participation in this regard, DC said potential of beaches at Ullal and Tannirbhavi will be fully tapped given that the administration rights of these beaches have been handed over to private players.

Star evening will feature performance by Oscar award winning film Slumdog Millionaire singer Vijayprakash and his troupe. Internationally acknowledged group of hobby kite flyers - Team Mangalore will display their collection of kites at the kite show while local women will tickle the taste buds with local delicacies at the food festival. Beach games will give youth chance to display their talents, said Sandeep Puthran, president of the Mandala.

Mangalore MLA UT Khader who released the logo said the idea of hosting a beach festival to commemorate a milestone for the Yuvaka Mandala will give a further impetus to this small town, some 20-kms from the city. Steps should be taken to promote Ullal as a tourism village, he noted. Organisers will honour Salumarada Thimmakka and Harekala Hajabba who have contributed to ecology and education on this occasion, Sandeep noted.
