Unbeaten run in ICC World Twenty20 takes India to top of ICC rankings

April 2, 2014

ICC_rankingsDubai, Apr 2: Riding on their superb unbeaten run in the World Twenty20 World Cup so far, the Indian cricket team toppled Sri Lanka to clinch the top spot in the ICC rankings issued on Wednesday.

“India has moved ahead of Sri Lanka into the number-one position on the Reliance ICC T20I Team Rankings Table,” the ICC said in a statement.

India gained seven ratings points after remaining unbeaten in their group engagements in Bangladesh to finish on 130, bringing them on par with Sri Lanka.

But when ratings were calculated beyond the decimal point, Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s side found himself ranked higher.

With both India and Sri Lanka through to the semi-finals, both have a chance to either retain or reclaim the number-one position.

In the other change in the table, West Indies and Australia have swapped positions. West Indies are now ranked fifth with a gain of five ratings points and are now on 115.

Australia, on the other hand, have moved down a place to sixth with a drop of five ratings points to end on 110.

In all, 13 of 16 teams ranked on the rankings table have featured in the tournament.

The tournament carries a total prize money of USD three million, with the winning side taking home USD 1.1 million and the runner-up collecting USD 550,000.

In the individual rankings, Virat Kohli has moved up a rung to be third in the latest list for batsmen, while R Ashwin has zoomed up 16 places to break into the top-10 at a career-high sixth.

West Indies’ leg-spinner Samuel Badree has moved up a place to replace teammate Sunil Narine as the number-one ranked bowler in the latest Reliance ICC Player Ranking for T20I bowlers.

Badree is currently the third highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 10 scalps from four matches, at an average of nine and an economy rate of 5.62.

Badree’s efforts have helped him gain 109 ratings points to finish on 855, 45 ratings points ahead of teammate Narine.

Before the start of the tournament, Badree was behind Narine by just one ratings point.

England’s Alex Hales has moved up a place to second in the rankings for batsmen.

Sri Lanka’s Kusal Perera and South Africa batsman JP Duminy have made it to the top 10 for the first-time ever.

Sydney, Mar 14: New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson has been placed under 24-hour isolation amid the fears of coronavirus after he reported a sore throat following the first ODI of the ongoing three-match series against Australia in Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) which the hosts won by 71 runs.

"In accordance with recommended health protocols, Lockie Ferguson has been placed in isolation at the team hotel for the next 24 hours after reporting a sore throat at the end of the first ODI," said New Zealand Cricket in a statement.

"Once the test results are received and diagnosed, his return to the team can be determined," it added.

The first ODI of the Chappell-Hadlee series was played in front of empty stands as the spectators were not allowed to be at SCG as a precautionary measure to contain the spread of coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier, Australian fast bowler, Kane Richardson was also tested for the coronavirus, after suffering from a sore throat on Thursday. That saw him left out of the squad for Friday's game but the test was negative.

Bengaluru, Feb 25: India opening batsman KL Rahul will be available for Karnataka's Ranji Trophy semi-final clash against Bengal at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on February 29.

Rahul had asked to be rested from Karnataka's quarter-final match but is now available for the climactic stages of the Ranji Trophy.

Karnataka had already been strengthened by the addition of Manish Pandey for the quarter-finals, with both Pandey and Rahul having returned from New Zealand after India completed the limited-overs leg of their tour, ESPNcricinfo reported.

Last year's finalists Saurashtra will take on Gujarat in the other semi-final at Rajkot. The other prominent players who will be part of the last four include Parthiv Patel (Gujarat), Jaydev Unadkat (Saurashtra) and Manoj Tiwary (Bengal).

Gujarat, Bengal, Karnataka, and Saurashtra had finished on top of the combined Groups A and B table, and all four progressed to the semi-finals after dominating their respective quarter-final matches.

Rahul has been phenomenal with the bat in the limited-overs series against Australia and New Zealand. He scored one century and four fifty-plus scores in his last ten innings in ODIs and T20Is combined
