Bengaluru, Apr 26: Angered by the major political parties’ apathy over their demands, the leaders of Brahmin community in Karnataka have threatened to hit NOTA (none of the above) on the Electronic Voting Machine in the May 12 state assembly polls.

On condition of anonymity, a representative of the Akhila Bharatiya Brahaman Mahasangha (ABBM) told coastaldigest.com that the federation may advise the community members to register their protest by rejecting the candidates of all the parties.

Nearly a month ago, the ABBM had put forth its demands for the upcoming polls and vowed to support any political party that would include them in its poll manifesto.

The demands of the ABBM included setting up a 'Brahmana Welfare Foundation', launching an honorarium of Rs 5,000 for poor priests, and enacting Prevention of Atrocities against Brahmins Act.

None of the political parties, however, have considered these demands seriously. Hence, the ABBM has helplessly decided to choose NOTA option, he said.

According to Govinda Kulkarni, the president of ABBM, a considerable number of people in the Brahmin community are lagging behind in all sectors and many Brahmin families are struggling for a livelihood.

“The economic condition of the community is in a bad state. In spite of this fact, the Brahmin community is often being targeted by all,” he lamented.

"All operations are normal at Mangluru International Airport. Everything is normal," told the airport director V.V. Rao to IANS.

Rao said even on Monday, there was no interruption to the airport operations, except for that one recalled IndiGo flight to Bengaluru.

"As the explosive was isolated and taken away from the airport, there was no disturbance to flights, except one Bengaluru-bound IndiGo flight which suffered a few hours delay and took off later," said Rao.

Meanwhile, security has been tightened at the airport.

Mangluru north assistant commissioner of police Belliappa told media that the police are still on the hunt for the culprits who planted the bomb at the airport.

Mangaluru, Jul 31: Muslims across coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada today observed Eid al Adha following the safety guidelines issued by the government amidst covid-19 pandemic.

While coastal Karnataka is celebrating the festival of sacrifice today, it will be observed in other parts of Karnataka and country tomorrow.

Congregational Eid prayers were held in many mosques while ensuring physical distancing norms. Only 50 devotees were allowed in mosques. Children below 10 years of age and elders above 60 years of age weren’t allowed.

Eidgahs in the region wore a deserted look as the government has temporarily prohibited prayers in the open grounds. The Eidgah at Lighthouse Hill in Mangaluru, which usually witnessed huge crowd during Eid celebrations, was also closed this time.

As expected, the celebration this time was a low key thanks to the restrictions placed in tune with the threat of coronavirus infection.

Prayers were held in Kudroli’s Nadupalli and Bundar’s Zeenat Bakhsh Central mosque. All those who entered mosque were wearing masks.

In Udupi city, Eid prayers were held at Jamia Masjid and other mosques with limited number of devotees. In Bhatkal took some of the mosques hosted Eid prayers with all precautionary measures.
