Unprecedented security for Modi's Srinagar rally

Srinagar rallySrinagar, Dec 7: Jammu and Kashmir's summer capital Srinagar resembled a fortress Sunday as security forces virtually took charge of the city ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's public rally Monday.

Security personnel were deployed on all roads, and they checked motorists and pedestrians without exception.

"It is one of the most elaborate security arrangements we have ever made in and around Srinagar in recent times," a senior police officer said.

Barricades were erected to ensure that no one from outside Srinagar enters the city Sunday and Monday without passing through an exhaustive access control system.

Vehicles were halted and checked to ensure no subversive material is smuggled into the city where Modi is scheduled to address his first public rally after becoming the prime minister.

The venue, the Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium, has been taken over by the security forces.

Levelling of the ground and refurbishing of the stadium as well as removal of flood waste has been going on for over a week at the venue.

The stadium is out of bounds for everyone except those directly engaged in the security arrangements.

The stadium was flooded like many other places in uptown Srinagar during the devastating September floods this year.

Director General of Police K. Rajendra Kumar visited the stadium Saturday to oversee security details.

The weekend market, otherwise a permanent feature of the city centre Lal Chowk and Residency Road, was not allowed Sunday as these places happen to be located near the stadium.

Very little private and public transport plied on Srinagar's roads Sunday.

Modi's public rally to seek support for BJP candidates in assembly elections is being held in the aftermath of the bloody Friday in which 21 people were killed in terror attacks in the Kashmir Valley.

Hundreds of police and paramilitary personnel are overseeing security in the city, including the Shankaracharya hill.

This is to prevent militants from firing rocket propelled grenades during the rally.

The Bharatiya Janata Party is expecting a large number of people to flock to the stadium Monday to hear Modi.

New Delhi, Mar 23: The central government has asked state governments to take strict action against violators of the coronavirus lockdown being enforced in 80 districts across the country.

An official statement released on Monday said there will be a total lockdown in 80 districts where coronavirus cases have been reported. The shutdown will end on March 31.

Delhi's borders will remain sealed during the lockdown, but essential services related to health, food, water and power supply will continue, and 25 per cent of the DTC buses will run to transport people associated with essential services.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier on Monday appealed to state governments to ensure that rules and regulations of the coronavirus lockdown are enforced as he noted that many people were not taking the measure seriously.

"Many people are still not taking the lockdown seriously. Please save yourself, save your family, follow the instructions seriously. I request state governments to ensure rules and laws are followed," he said in a tweet in Hindi.

New Delhi, Jun 26: With the highest single-day spike of 17,296 COVID-19 cases reported in the last 24 hours, India's COVID-19 count reached 4,90,401 on Friday, said the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).

The country also saw 407 deaths in the last 24 hours, which pushed the death toll to 15,301.

The total number of cases includes 1,89,463 active cases, 2,85,637cured/discharged/migrated cases, as per the MoHFW.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the total number of samples tested up to June 25 is 77,76,228; the number of samples tested on 25 June is 2,15,446.

Maharashtra remains the worst-affected state in the country with 1,47,741 cases. The active cases in the state are 63,357. The number of people cured or discharged stands at 77,453 while the death toll is at 6,931.

Delhi has so far reported 73,780 cases. The active cases in the national capital stood at 26,586. While the cured and discharged numbers stood at 44,765. The death toll in the city is 2,429.

Tamil Nadu has so far reported 70,977. With active cases at 30,067 and the number of cured or discharged at 39,999, while the death toll stood at 911.

New Delhi, Jun 27: India on Saturday crossed 5 lakh-mark with record highest spike of 18,552 cases of coronavirus reported in the country in the past 24 hours.

India has added more than 3.18 lakh COVID-19 cases since June 1.

According to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, this was the highest single-day spike of COVID-19 positive cases. Also, with 384 fatalities in the past 24 hours, the total deaths inched closer to the 16000 mark.

With this, the total number of active cases are 1,97,387 while a total of 2,95,880 people have been cured or discharged from hospitals. The death toll stands at 15685 with one person migrated outside India, according to the health ministry update at 8 am today.

Maharashtra continues to top the countrywide list with a total number of COVID-19 positive cases at 1,52,765.

Delhi has so far reported 77,240 confirmed cases while Tamil Nadu has reported 74622 cases till now, as per the MoHFW. Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai are the worst-hit cities in the country

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the total number of samples tested up to June 26 is 79,96,707; the number of samples tested on June 26, Friday stands at 2,20,479.
