Mangaluru, Jun 24: The activists of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) on Friday staged a novel protest against the inordinate delay in commissioning the road underbridge on Padil-Bajal Main Road in the city.

Members of the Bajal-Pakkaladka and Jalligudde units of DYFI as well as local residents took part in the fishing in the stagnant water' protest at the RuB at 10 a.m.

In a release issued here, DYFI district secretary Santosh Bajal said that the residents were put to hardship because of the non-completion of the project.

“It is almost a year since the RUB was constructed Padil-Bajal main road. However, Mangaluru City Corporation has still not been able to set right this vital road that provides access to many other adjoining areas. The construction of RUB has totally cut off the road connecting Faisalnagar and Jayanagar. People of these areas are forced to walk up to the main road at Padil for their daily needs and vocation,” he noted.

The RUB has been constructed in an unscientific manner and rain water collects there as there is no proper drainage facility. It is difficult for motorists to use this road, especially after it has rained, he said.

People are forced to use alternative and longer routes to avoid this mess in order to reach the city, he said adding the present situation has arisen squarely because of total lack of coordination between the civic body and Palakkad division of Southern Railways, he complained.

Mangaluru, Jan 16: A protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act, National Register of Citizens and National Population Register organised by the Muslim Central Committee of the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts near Adiyar on Wednesday signalled a snowballing opposition to the measures.

Harsh Mander, former Indian Administrative Service officer-turned-social activist, asserted that the nation’s fight against 'fascist' forces including Bharatiya Janata Party and its parent organisation Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh began over 100 years ago when Mahatma Gandhi returned from South Africa and led the freedom movement against the British.

In his address, Mr Mander asserted that the fight against CAA and NRC is also a campaign to save the secular fabric of the nation. He added that the fight began over a century ago when Hindu Mahasabha and other organisations popped up with their vision to turn the nation into a Hindu country.4

Mangaluru, Jan 11: A large number of people from the Women India Movement on Saturday staged a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) here and raised slogans denouncing the newly enacted law.

Protestors were seen carrying placards that read, 'Stop diving India, Boycott CAA, NRC, NPR', 'We are humans, not criminals', 'Save India from fascism'.

"Today's youths are tomorrow's future. The present leaders are scared by the youths and are trying to wipe us out. They are scared of the students because they are raising their voices," a protestor told media.

"It started with the triple talaq, then the removal of Article 370 and Babri Masjid verdict. We Muslims kept quiet but now it is a question to our Constitution. We are not here as Muslims but as an Indian Citizen protesting against the cruelty of the BJP government," she added.

The protestor said the Central government is trying to make India a Hindu Rashtra by wiping out all other communities.

"This fascist government is trying to poison the minds of Hindus against the Muslims. After Muslims, there will be the Christian community and then other communities. The main motive of the government is to only keep Brahmins in India," added the protestor.

The newly-enacted law grants citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Parsi, Buddhist, and Christian refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, who came to India on or before December 31, 2014.
