UPA made corruption a cause by protesting IT raid in Karnataka, mocks Jaitley

New Delhi, Mar 30: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Saturday said the Congress-led UPA made "corruption a cause" by staging an "unprecedented" protest in Bengaluru along with the Janata Dal (Secular).

Jaitley's remark comes a day after Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy, deputy chief minister G Parameshwara and other senior leaders from the JD (S) and Congress protested outside the Income Tax department's office against raids being conducted at locations linked to a number of leaders from the two parties.

"The UPA made corruption a cause by holding an unprecedented protest with JDS in Bengaluru on 28th March, 2019 outside the Income Tax Office. No Politician, Minister or MP was searched, no political motivation. Then why the clamour, surely corruption is their cause."

"The disproportionality of the reaction of the Congress and the JDS raises a needle of suspicion. Was the Minister’s Nephew a PWD Contractor to whom largesses have been given – a case of nepotism? The CM & the Ministers who joined the protest need to answer these questions."

Jaitley, in his blog post, claimed there was a link between Public Works Department (PWD) officials, contractors, engineers and protesting politicians in the state.

"Did they have a vicarious pecuniary interest in the substance? Is it a case where the PWD Department pays the Contractors, the Engineers being the collecting agents and the principals of the agents turn protestors?" he asked.

In the wake of raids, the Union Minister explained that the state should abide by Constitutional Federalism.

"Constitutional federalism entails India as a ‘Union of States’, the Rights of the Union are equally important. If the States stand in way of Union’s functions it is guilty of breaching federal norms. Is the States’ attitude a threat to federalism?" he wrote.

Explaining powers of the Union and what constitutes breaching of federal norms, Jaitley wrote, "Security of India, sovereignty, dealing with terrorism, managing the borders, Custom Check Points, Income Tax enforcement are all amongst the several Constitutional powers of the Union. If the States stand in way of any of them it is guilty of breaching federal norms."

Jaitley also claimed the protest was a "means to gain sympathy over Federalism."

"The Bengaluru case is a textbook method of the UPA on 2 fronts: use Government money, round trip it through Contractors & beneficiaries to enrich themselves & then lip sympathy for federalism destroying it whenever the opportunity arises. This is a very transparent self-goal," he wrote.

Kumaraswamy had accused the Income Tax department of working on the directions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah. He had also alleged that the BJP government was behaving like a "dictator."

Earlier today, Karnataka Congress chief Dinesh Gundu Rao wrote to President Ram Nath Kovind seeking his intervention into the "politically motivated" raids.

"We request you to direct the Income Tax department to desist from conducting raids in the interest of free and fair elections," Rao urged President Kovind.

Bengaluru, Feb 12: Hinting at the possibility of a consolidation of ex-Janata Parivar leaders, JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda said Tuesday his party was open to talk to any former Janata leaders, who are at present either in various factions of the Janata Dal or in Congress and BJP. The veteran leader also appreciated Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP's way of work.

At the party's National Executive Committee meeting held here, Gowda said that some ex-Janata Parivar leaders had reached out to him in this regard. His comments come at a time when JD(U) leader Mahima Patel recently rekindled the debate of a unified Janata Parivar.

However, Deve Gowda was clear that he was not interested in pursuing anyone who was happy with the party they were in. "It's a waste of time to pursue someone who has seen success within their party. I am not going to do that. I am willing to persuade only those who are not holding any office at present," he said. He added that he had already asked party leaders in Kerala to take the initiative and figure out ways to bring leaders together. As for other places, it would take him some time to reach out people, he added.

The party, which organised the National Executive Meet here on February 10 and 11, spoke of strategies to rejuvenate the party from the grassroots level. The party is also conducting a membership drive.

'Much to learn from AAP'

There is much to learn from Aam Aadmi Party, which registered a victory in Delhi elections on Tuesday, said Devegowda. "Kejriwal has showed that caste does not matter. There is lesson to be learnt from the work done by AAP," he said. Later in the day, Deve Gowda also wrote a letter to Arvind Kejriwal, congratulating him on his victory.

On the occasion, the party also came up with resolutions to urge the central government to release pending amount of GST it owed to state governments apart from focusing on development of labour, industries and agriculture; to demand the centre to rollback decision on CAA, NRC and NPR and to urge the centre to pass the women's reservation bill.

At the JD(S) National Executive Meet, even as news poured in about the victory of Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi elections, the JD(S) leaders celebrated Arvind Kejriwal's victory. Seeing it as an optimistic sign for regional parties across the country, the leaders distributed sweets to mark the hat trick win of Kejriwal.
