US Dollar 10,000 seized from passenger at Mangaluru Airport

Mangalore, Aug 19: A total of 10,000 US dollars were seized from a passenger en route to Dubai from Mangalore Airport, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) said on Monday.

According to the CISF, foreign currency was recovered from a passenger, identified as Shashank Bysani Gupta, during the frisking process at the Mangalore airport.

"The passenger had concealed a bundle of foreign currency (5100 USD) in his trouser's pocket. When his handbag was searched thoroughly, an amount of 4900 USD was also found kept in a pouch," CISF said in an official statement.

The officials also added that the passenger along with confiscated currency 10,000 USD has been handed over to Customs officials for further necessary action.

Customs officials offloaded the passenger and an investigation in this regard is underway.

Bengaluru, May 27: Former Karnataka chief minister and JD-S leader HD Kumaraswamy on Wednesday said that the state government should withdraw the decision to name the Yelahanka bridge after Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.

"The state government's decision to name the Yelahanka bridge after Savarkar is a disgrace to those who have struggled for the country's prosperity. This doesn't give a good name to the state government," Kumaraswamy tweeted.

"There are many great people who worked for the development of the country before and after independence. Their names could have been used for this bridge. Do other states name their bridges after our leaders? On behalf of the people of the state, I urge the state government to take a step back from this decision," he added.

The newly built Yelahanka bridge was named after Savarkar last year in a BBMP council meeting. Later it was sent to state government for approval. Tomorrow, the bridge is likely to be inaugurated for public use.

Bengaluru, July 31: Denying irregularities in covid-19 equipment purchase by the Karnataka government, the state unit of the BJP has issued legal notices to Congress leaders Siddaramaiah and D K Shivakumar demanding that they apologize or face a defamation suit. 

The notices seek a public apology for the allegations levelled against the government on irregularities in the procurement of Covid-19 equipment and supplies. 

Both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, the Karnataka Congress president, have been doggedly pursuing allegations of corruption against the BJP government and have demanded a judicial inquiry. 

BJP general secretary N Ravi Kumar said that while the Congress leaders claimed that Rs 4,157 crore was spent during Covid-19, they also allege that the government has not responded to any of the 20 letters written by them. "If the government has not provided any answer to the Opposition, where did they get the figures from," he said.

None of the allegations of corruption is specific and the statements made are factually incorrect. "These statements, without any basis, have been issued calculatedly to lower the image and damage the reputation of the government, the Bharatiya Janata Party, representatives of the party and the ministers in the government," the notice issued on behalf of Ravi Kumar read.

Mangaluru, Jun 15: A father and his four-year-old son were killed when their motorcycle was hit by a lorry from behind at Bakampady junction on the outskirts of the city.

The Police said the deceased has been identified as Abdul Bhasheer, a resident of Krishnapura and his son Shayan. 

On Sunday evening, Bahseer was going from Mangaluru to Krishnapura by the motorcycle along with wife and son when a speeding lorry "dashed into the motorcycle from behind and knocked them down''.

The four-year-old son died on the spot while Basher and his wife were rushed to the hospital. However, the husband succumbed to injuries at the hospital on Monday. Local police registered a case in this connection.
