US Dollar 10,000 seized from passenger at Mangaluru Airport

Mangalore, Aug 19: A total of 10,000 US dollars were seized from a passenger en route to Dubai from Mangalore Airport, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) said on Monday.

According to the CISF, foreign currency was recovered from a passenger, identified as Shashank Bysani Gupta, during the frisking process at the Mangalore airport.

"The passenger had concealed a bundle of foreign currency (5100 USD) in his trouser's pocket. When his handbag was searched thoroughly, an amount of 4900 USD was also found kept in a pouch," CISF said in an official statement.

The officials also added that the passenger along with confiscated currency 10,000 USD has been handed over to Customs officials for further necessary action.

Customs officials offloaded the passenger and an investigation in this regard is underway.

Mangaluru, May 31:  Even as the worst locust attack on India in recent years raised concerns over its impact on crops, swarms of locusts have triggered panic in Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada too. 

Farmers in the coastal district were taken aback when they found the swarms of locusts, which they feared as the arrival of desert locusts in the region.

According to reports, Renjalady village under the limits of Nuji Baltila Gramp Panchayats in Kadaba taluk and Shirlalu village in Belthangady taluk witnessed locust attacks in last couple of days. 

“Locust swarms were seen in many areas. We have also alerted agriculture department. Already insects have destroyed crops of many farmers,” said a farmer in Shirlalu village.  

Joint director of Dakshina Kannada district agriculture department MC Seetha confirmed that officials have received information from villagers about the locust scare and entemologists have already visited the place to collect more information.

Not Desert Locusts?

“We contacted entemologists and forwarded the pictures that farmers sent to us. Looking at the picture, entemologists have opined that it may be calotropis locust or colour grasshopper. Desert locusts usually arrive in lakhs,” said Ms Seetha. Desert locusts that are destroying crops in other parts of India may not come to Dakshina Kannada, she added.

Udupi, Aug 1: A young rider lost his life after a head-on collision between a scooter and a car on K G Road in Udupi last evening.

The deceased has been identified as Praveen Ganiga (24), a resident of Kodavoor in Malpe.

According to police Praveen was riding his scooter on the wrong side of the road. The car was plying from Brahmavar to Udupi.

The people on board car suffered minor injuries in the mishap. A case was registered at Brahmavar police station and investigations are on.

Gadag, Apr 9: An 80-year-old woman who tested positive for COVID-19 passed away on Thursday due to cardiac arrest in Gadag, the district's Deputy Commissioner said.

She also had a history of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI). Her body was disposed of as per the protocol, officials said.

According to the Karnataka Government, 10 new positive cases have been reported in the State today, taking the total COVID-19 cases to 191, including 28 discharged patients and six deaths.

With an increase of 540 positive COVID-19 cases reported in the last 24 hours, India's tally of coronavirus cases has risen to 5,734, said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Thursday.

Out of the 5,734 cases, 5,095 are active COVID-19 cases and 472 patients have recovered while 166 have died.
