US national gangrape: Himachal court convicts three Nepalese

Kullu (Himachal Pradesh), Dec 18: In less than six months of the gangrape of a 30-year-old US national in Manali, a court here sentenced three Nepalese youths to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for the crime, an official said Wednesday.

District and Session Judge Purender Vaidya Tuesday sentenced Arjun, Lucky and Som Bahadur Tamang and imposed on them a fine of Rs.10,000 each. In case of default on payment, they will have to further undergo a two-year jail term, an investigating officer told IANS.

Police filed a chargesheet against the accused, all drivers of Nepali nationality, within a week of the gangrape June 4.

The woman who reached Manali, some 500 km from the national capital Delhi, with three other women a day before the crime, alleged that she was repeatedly raped by the three men who offered her a lift in a vehicle early June 4 when she could not find a taxi on the outskirts of Manali.

Police said the men drove the woman to a secluded spot to rape and rob her.

The accused have been convicted with rape, abduction and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The picturesque Kullu Valley in Himachal Pradesh is known for attracting backpackers, especially from the US, Britain, Italy, France and Germany.

Srinagar, Mar 27: Over 180 people with undeclared recent travel histories have been traced and shifted into quarantine in Srinagar, officials said.
"COVID-19: Over 180 persons with undeclared recent travel histories have been traced and shifted into quarantine this past week in Srinagar. Some 200 more complaints are being verified. Just hoping no one is infected as it's just too hard to even imagine the possible consequences." Srinagar district administration tweeted.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had earlier on Thursday reported 88 new COVID-19 cases, which is the highest in a single day, taking the total countrywide tally to 694.

Tezpur (Assam), Mar 2: Seven boys, who had appeared for their class 10 board examinations, were apprehended on Sunday for allegedly raping and killing a 12-year-old girl in Assam's Biswanath district, police said.

The girl was hanged from a tree after the crime.

The incident happened on Friday in Chakla village under the jurisdiction of Gohpur police station, they said.

A senior police officer told PTI that the culprits, all of them High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examinees, were on the run, but were nabbed by a police team.

The accused after the examination had called the victim to a house on the pretext of organising a party and raped her, the officer said.

It is suspected that the girl was raped on Friday night and then hanged from a tree in a forest near the house, the senior police officer said.

The body was found on Saturday.

Allahabad, Mar 1: Shabista Khan, wife of suspended pediatrician Dr Kafeel Khan, fears that her husband's life is in danger.

In a letter written to the chief justice of the Allahabad High Court and senior government authorities, Shabista has sought security for her husband who is lodged in Mathura jail for allegedly delivering provocative speech during anti-CAA protest at Aligarh Muslim University.

"My husband is being mentally tortured in jail and is being subjected to inhuman behaviour," Shabista wrote in her letter to the chief justice of Allahabad High Court, additional chief secretary (home) and director general (jail), among others.

She said that she apprehended that an attempt could be made on her husband's life in jail and demanded adequate security for him.

She also demanded that her husband should be kept away from active criminals and lodged with common prisoners.
