Mangaluru, Apr 12: Congress leader and urban development minister U T Khader has justified the religious beliefs of Dakshina Kannada Congress candidate Mithun Rai, saying it is wrong to consider recitation of a verse from Hanuman Chalisa during poll campaign as the party’s soft Hindutva policy.

Addressing a press conference at the Dakshina Kannada Pradesh Congress Committee office, Mr. Khader said that Mr. Rai has faith in Hanuman Chalisa and has been chanting it before the start of his speech during campaign.

“There is nothing wrong in reciting (a verse of) Hanuman Chalisa or one from the Quran,” he said.

Mr. Khader said that Mr. Rai believes in secular principles of the party. The Congress continues to be vocal against Hindu and Muslim fundamentalist groups which are trying to create unrest in society, he said.

Mr. Khader said that he was confident of diligent voters in the region preferring Mr. Rai as their Member of Parliament. Mr. Rai can effectively take up issues of the region in Parliament than Nalin Kumar Kateel did.

The promise of paying Rs. 6,000 per month to the poor and other assurances made in the Congress manifesto were close to the aspirations of the people than those that were mentioned in BJP manifesto, Mr. Khader said.

Dakshina Kannada Pradesh Congress Committee president K. Harish Kumar was present.

Bengaluru, Jan 5: Lambasting Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa over the proposal to rename Ramanagara as Nava Bengaluru, former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy on Sunday said that such a move will be an insult to Lord Ram, after whom the district is named.

In a series of tweets, Kumaraswamy accused that renaming the district was a pretext to sell its fertile irrigated land to capitalists. Yediyurappa also wants to settle a score with me by renaming it, he alleged

"If Yediyurappa wishes to develop Ramanagara, he should release the funds allocated in the budget. If you want to develop it further, you will find support from me and my people. But, don't set fire to the districts' culture and identity by changing its name," he tweeted.

Mangaluru, Jul 4: Normal life was thrown out of gear as heavy rain under the influence of South East Monsoon started lashing coastal districts of Karnataka including Dakshina Kannada on Saturday.

The heavy rain is likely to continue till July 7, according to the meteorological experts.

The water level in Netravati river is increasing and district administration has warned the people living in the low lying areas and has asked them to move to safer places.

Owing to lack of storm water drains, water logging of the roads inconvenienced the motorists at KS Rao Road, Pumpwell, Bejai, and other areas.

The Met department sounded warning for fishermen not to venture into the sea observing that strong winds with speed reaching 50-60 kmph are likely to prevail over Southwest and West Central Arabian Sea till July 5.
