UTK writes to Modi criticizing BJP MP’s attempt to endorse tobacco use in India

Mangaluru, Apr 2: Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Minister U T Khader has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing concern over BJP MP Dilip Gandhi’s insensitive remarks that that there’s not enough Indian data to link tobacco to cancer.

ut modi gandhi In a letter sent to the Prime Minister, Mr Khader expressed shock over the recommendation put forward by Dilip Gandhi to reexamine the health effects of tobacco on an Indian population in concern with pictorial warnings implementation.

Dilip Gandhi, who head’s Parliamentary panel on subordinate legislation examining the provisions of Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 which had sought deferment of the move, earlier stated that there was no Indian study to confirm that use of tobacco products leads to cancer.

“If this report is true, it is disappointing as the health hazards of tobacco are well established worldwide over the decades. The carcinogenic chemicals in tobacco are the same worldwide and do not differ between countries in nature to harm human life. The same is proven well by the International agency for research on cancer- a wing of W.H.O,” said Mr Khader.

It is shocking that a senior MP is so poorly informed about the facts pertaining to harmful effects of tobacco. It also clearly shows the influence of the tobacco industry on the policy maker in a bid to distort science and influence policy. Tobacco is attributable cause for almost 40 % of cancers in India and majority of lung or heart diseases. It is appalling that Dilip Gandhi is challenging the recommendations of W.H.O, United Nations, UICC, CDC, NCI etc with regards to health effects of tobacco. In December 2010, Supreme Court had directed Ministry of Health to constitute an expert committee to study the harmful effects of tobacco. The committee submitted a damming report proving beyond doubt that tobacco is indeed very harmful, said Mr Khader in his letter.

Mr Khader further said: “This poor and unscientific approach by a policy maker can only make way for Acche Din to the tobacco industry, which contributes to highest deaths from NCD in our country. I strongly urge you to take cognizance of the issue and show your commitment for a Swasth Bharat by intervening in this policy measure that has potential to save lives.”

If declared constitutional by SC, it will be problematic for states to oppose CAA: Kapil Sibal

New Delhi, Jan 19: Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal on Sunday asserted that every state assembly has the constitutional right to pass a resolution and seek the amended Citizenship Act's withdrawal, but if the law is declared constitutional by the Supreme Court then it will be problematic to oppose it.

His remarks came a day after he had said there is no way a state can deny the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) when it is already passed by the Parliament.

"I believe the CAA is unconstitutional. Every State Assembly has the constitutional right to pass a resolution and seek its withdrawal. When and if the law is declared to be constitutional by the Supreme Court then it will be problematic to oppose it. The fight must go on!" Sibal said in a tweet.

His remarks on the CAA at the Kerala Literature Festival (KLF) on Saturday had caused a flutter as several non-BJP governments, including Kerala, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Maharashtra, have voiced their disagreement with the CAA as well as National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR).

"If the CAA is passed no state can say 'I will not implement it'. It is not possible and is unconstitutional. You can oppose it, you can pass a resolution in the Assembly and ask the central government to withdraw it.

"But constitutionally saying that I won't implement, it is going to be problematic and going to create more difficulties," said the former minister of law and justice.

10 persons arrested for escaping home quartine in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Mar 31: Ten persons who were under home quarantine in Bengaluru and had escaped to their native places, were arrested on Monday.
A case has been registered against them at Gurmitkal Police Station, said BH Anil Kumar, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike (BBMP) Commissioner.

Seven new COVID-19 cases were confirmed in Karnataka between Saturday 5 pm and Sunday 2 pm.

The total number of positive cases in the state stands at 83, out of which five have been cured and three have lost their lives, according to the Karnataka Health Department.

Twitter briefly blocks Karnataka BJP’s official account over provocative tweets

Social media giant Twitter briefly blocked the Karnataka BJP's account after it posted several provocative tweets and taunted Muslim women.

Ironically, the BJP called its unhygienic tweets as "liberal views". "It is unfortunate that our handle was locked out by Twitter for speaking the truth about liberals," it said.

"A big thanks for your support and encouragement. Satymeva Jayate. Jai Hind," the political party said to its supporters.

However, it did not specify for how long Twitter blocked its account but tweeted again on Wednesday after Monday.

Last week Karnataka BJP drew flak on Twitter for taking a swipe at Muslim women who appear to be standing in a line to vote in Delhi's assembly polls. ""Kaagaz Nahi Dikayenge Hum" ! ! ! Keep the documents safe, you will need to show them again during NPR exercise (sic)," the party's Karnataka Twitter handle posted using the hashtag #DelhiPolls2020.

It tweeted on Monday, accusing Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh, Sushil Kumar Shinde and Vijay Bahuguna for "cheating" Dalits.

Karnataka BJP spokesperson G. Madhusudhan said that he had no idea about the account being blocked and then unblocked by Twitter.

"What has happened? I don't know," said Madhusudhana.

Reacting to the drubbing BJP suffered in the Delhi Assembly polls, the party tweeted that there is no need to lose heart.

"Now is the time to go back to voters to win their hearts and minds. Let us plan for 2025 from today. We are with you," tweeted Karnataka BJP on Wednesday.

Though BJP congratulated Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for winning the Delhi polls, the party highlighted that it managed to increase it vote share by six per cent compared to 2015.
