V U George conferred Karnataka Media Academy Award

Mangalore, November 30: V U George, the editor and publisher of 'Mangalore Today', a city based monthly magazine, has been honoured with the State sponsored 'Karnataka Media Academy Award' for the year 2010 along with 19 other media personalities.

Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda presented the award to Mr George on Tuesday at at Jnana Jyothi Hall in Bangalore. The award comprises Rs 10,000 cash prize and a citation.

After receiving the award, Mr George thanked the Academy and selection committee. “I want to share this recognition with our entire 'Mangalore Today' team, both past and present who have been a part of the journey”, he said.

He was recognized for his pioneering effort in bringing out 'Mangalore Today', the city's first local English monthly magazine and running it for the last 15 years facing immense struggles and hardships in maintaining the long term viability of the venture.

George started Mangalore Today in 1996 with a small team of young and enthusiastic journalists and the first issue was launched at Hotel Moti Mahal on December 17 of that year. In 2005, the magazine hosted the 'Mangalore Today Conclave' to commemorate its 10th year and subsequently the event has been organized three more times. In 2009, the magazine also launched its web edition.

Mangalore, Jan 4: Writer-Researcher Dr Indira Heggade has been elected as the president of Mangaluru Taluk Sahitya Sammelan, which will be held on January 29 at St Agnes College in the City.

Dr Indira Heggade has brought out three stories, four novels and one poetry. She co-wrote 'Guttininda Sainika Jagattige' with SR Heggade.

Also, she translated 'Bantaru Vandu Samajo Samskrutika Adhyana' into English.

She is the recipient of various award given by literary and cultural organisations of Karnataka, including Janapada Academy Award, and Rani Abbakka Award.

Indira Heggade, along with receiving several awards in foreign nations, honoured with Sahitya Academy Award, Kamana Rangaswamy Dattinidhi Awards.

Kasaragod, Apr 7: The new COVID Hospital at the Kasaragod Medical College has started functioning, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Monday.

The new administrative block of Kasaragod Medical College was converted into a COVID-19 Hospital for providing better treatment facilities to the coronavirus patients, the Chief Minister said while addressing a press conference at the Government Secretariat.

Stating that the hospital was converted to a Corona Care Hospital in just four days, he said 200 beds and 10 ICU beds are now ready.

Mangaluru, Mar 14: In a bid to prevent the coronavirus spread in the city, Mangaluru City Corporation on Saturday disallowed the street vendors to continue their business activities until further notice.

MCC Commissioner Shanady Ajith Kumar Hegde, in an order released today, warned that any vehicles, carts or trolleys that would be seen violating the order will be towed away.

The development comes in the wake of state wide ban on all shopping malls. In Mangaluru too all the malls remained shut today.
