In Varanasi, Arvind Kejriwal taunts Narendra Modi, says Gujarat CM will vanish after polls

Gujarat_CM_will_vanishVaranasi, Apr 20: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal taunted his BJP rival and party's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Saturday saying if he hadn't been seen before the polls, people of Varanasi would not see him after.

Kejriwal was speaking at a public rally in Ramnagar city in the district. The sarcasm may have hurt BJP supporters since Modi has not been to the city even once after his candidature was announced.

"If he hasn't come before the election, you won't see him after," Kejriwal said. Throwing questions at the audience he asked if anyone among the "Modi bakhts" had met or talked to Modi. The response was a resounding no.

Kejriwal was speaking in Ramnagar, a city known as the residence of Kashi Naresh or King of Varanasi, on his third day of campaigning. "I've been campaigning for three days now. Modi is definitely losing," he said.

The AAP leader's speeches in Varanasi have been predominantly peppered with attacks against Modi's and Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi's allegedly close ties with industrialists Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani. In sharp contrast, Modi has only spoken once indirectly referring to Kejriwal as a "Pakistani agent" and "AK-49" alluding to AAP's 49-day government in Delhi.

Continuing his attack on the media, Kejriwal said media was spreading lies like opium. "Don't come under its (media's) influence. You must be aware when you vote," he said.

Kejriwal plans to camp in Varanasi for the next one month till polling day. He also promised a manifesto for Benaras. Inviting suggestions he said, "We plan to bring a manifesto for Benaras that will tackle the problems of the weavers, the dirty Ganga, traffic and power."

The former Delhi CM dwelt at length with his 49 day stint in power. Despite that he has been asked why he quit government in several public meetings.

The AAP meetings in Varanasi have none of the bravado that the party enjoys in Delhi. In the capital its confidence has been based on the over 40,000 volunteers and 28 MLAs. In Varanasi where it has skeletal operations, the party is more nimble-footed unlike BJP or Samajwadi Party.

New Delhi, Jun 17: Petrol and diesel prices were increased in metros on Wednesday, marking the eleventh straight day of increase since state-owned oil companies returned to the normal practice of daily reviews following a 12-week pause. With effect from 6 am, the price of petrol was increased by 55 paise per litre, and diesel by 69 paise per litre in Delhi, compared to the previous day. While the price of petrol was revised to Rs 77.28 per litre in the national capital from Rs 76.73 per litre the previous day, the diesel rate was increased to Rs 75.79 per litre from Rs 75.19 per litre, according to notifications from state-run Indian Oil Corporation, the country's largest fuel retailer. In the 11-day period, the price of petrol has been increased by a cumulative Rs 6.02 per litre, and diesel by Rs 6.49 per litre.

International crude oil prices retreated on Wednesday, weighed down by an increase in US crude inventories and worries about a potential second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. Brent crude futures - the global benchmark for crude oil - were last seen trading 1.0 per cent lower at $40.56 per barrel.

State-run oil marketing companies revise the prices of petrol and diesel from time to time, besides aviation turbine fuel (ATF) - or jet fuel - and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). However, since March 16, the oil companies had kept petrol and diesel prices on hold, possibly due to the volatility in global oil markets.

Fuel retailing in the country is dominated by state refiners - Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation. The three own about 90 per cent of the retail fuel outlets in the country.

New Delhi, Feb 5: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday announced that the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Kshetra, set up by the government for construction of a temple in Ayodhya, will have 15 trustees and one of them will be from the Dalit community.

The statement comes a little over an hour after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in Lok Sabha about the constitution of the trust.

"There will be 15 trustees in the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Kshetra Trust out of which one trustee will always be from the Dalit society," he tweeted.

Shah congratulated Modi "for such an unprecedented decision" that strengthens social harmony.

The home minister said the trust will be independent to take every decision related to the temple and 67 acres of land will be transferred to it.

"I fully believe that the waiting of millions of people for centuries will be over soon and they will be able to pay obeisance to Lord Shri Ram in his grand temple at his birthplace," he said.

New Delhi, Jul 22: Congress leader Sachin Pilot has served a legal notice to party MLA Giriraj Malinga, for claiming that the former had offered him money to join the BJP.

"Former Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot has served a legal notice to Congress MLA Giriraj Malinga for his Rs 35 crore bribery allegation," a source close to Pilot said.

Earlier, addressing a press conference, Malinga said, "Those MLAs who are stuck either in Haryana or Jaipur, are running after money. To say, they are not, are false claims. Even I was offered the same by Pilot, which I had refused. Came to this party knowing BJP and Congress do not accept money to give tickets."

When asked by the reporters whether he was offered Rs 35 crore, he claimed by saying, "Yes, 35." The MLA claimed he was himself the prove when the reporters asked for the same.

The political situation in Rajasthan is in turmoil after Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot sacked his then-deputy Sachin Pilot and the latter's confidants from his council of ministers. The Congress has also claimed that BJP was trying to buy its party MLAs.

On Monday, the Rajasthan High Court had said that it would hear the petition filed by Pilot and 18 of his loyalist MLAs on July 24, against the disqualification notices issued against them, a lawyer said.

"The arguments in the matter have been concluded. The court has heard the arguments from all the parties. The High Court has slated the matter for orders on July 24," Advocate Prateek Kasliwal told reporters after the hearing.
