Veteran Islamic cleric, Al Madeena Islamic Complex founder Abbas Musliyar passes away

Mangaluru, Jul 29: Veteran religious cleric and founder of Al Madina Islamic Complex at Manjanadi village on the outskirts of Manglauru, Al Haj P M Abbas Musliyar, passed away today after a brief illness. He was 73.

Hailing from a religious family, he had dedicated his entire life for the religious causes. He was a senior Islamic scholar having thousands of followers across Kerala and coastal Karnataka.

He was born in 1946 as the son of Muhammad Kunhi and Bi Fathima couple at Hakattur in Madikeri taluk of Kodagu district. 

He established Al Madeena Islamic Complex, which also comprises of an orphanage in 1994. Currently the institution imparts religious and material education to over 500 students including orphans.

As the news of the death began to spread thousands of people thronged the compound of Al Madeena Masjid where his mortal remains were kept for public viewing. 

According to sources, the funeral rites of Musliyar will be held on Tuesday morning at Al Madeena Masjid at Manjanady at 9.a.m.

Bengaluru, Apr 19: As many as 25 new cases of coronavirus have been reported in the State till now, said Karnataka's Health Department.

"25 new COVID-19 cases reported in the State from 5 pm Friday to 5 pm on Saturday. The total number of positive cases in the State is 384 including 14 deaths and 104 discharges," added the Health Department.

The Health Department has appealed to the doctors, who are willing to volunteer in the fight against coronavirus, to reach out to the government.

A total of 14,378 COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in the country so far, with 480 deaths being reported due to the virus.

Bengaluru, Apr 1: The price of petrol and diesel will go up by Rs 1.60 and Rs 1.59 per litre, respectively, from Wednesday. This is in line with Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa’s decision to hike the rate of tax on petrol from 32% to 35% and diesel from 21% to 24%.

He had announced this in his March 5 Budget for 2020-21 fiscal. At present, a litre of petrol costs Rs 71.97 and diesel Rs 64.41 in Bengaluru.

The government decided to roll out the hike from Tuesday midnight going into Wednesday, April 1, after briefly considering a postponement in view of the COVID-19 crisis. 

Finance Secretary (Budget & Resources) Ekroop Caur confirmed to DH that the hike will be rolled out. 

The 3% hike on fuel tax was a key resource mobilisation measure that Yediyurappa announced in his Budget. The hike is expected to fetch the government Rs 1,500 crore. 

Yediyurappa had also announced a 6% additional excise duty on Indian Made Liquor (IML), which could help the government mop up Rs 1,200 crore. However, the sale of liquor has been prohibited during the lockdown period. Plus, hiking fuel prices during the lockdown will not hit citizens very hard.

Mysuru, Jan 16: A day after the Mysuru Advocates’ Association refused to defend a student in Mysuru who has been charged with sedition case for displaying a ‘Free Kashmir’ placard, president of the People’s Lawyers’ Guild of Davangere, has come forward to appear in the Court on behalf of her.

Opposing the attack on JNU students and teachers at JNU recently, Nalini had displayed a ‘Free Kashmir’ placard during a protest on January 8 at Manasagangotri of the University of Mysore (UoM) campus here.

Members of the Mysuru Bar Association decided not to represent Nalini.
