Veteran litterateur, moderate Hindutva leader Erya Lakshminarayana Alva dies at 94

Mangaluru, Jul 27: Veteran Kannada litterateu and ‘soft Hindutva ideologue’ Erya Lakshminarayana Alva passes away today at a hospital in the city. 

He was 94. He is survived by wife Anandi Rai and daughter Sukhada.

Sources said that Alva suffered a heart attack at his house at Eryabeedu in the evening. He was taken to Fr Muller Hospital in Mangaluru, where he breathed his last at 9.20pm.

A prominent literary figure in Kannada, Alva had presided over several literary conventions and received several prominent awards. He was honoured with doctorate by the Mangalore University

Despite being an active leader of Vishwa Hindu Parishad for a prolonged period, he had maintained good relationship with other communities too. A soft face of Hindutva, he had attended several events of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind. 

He was born to Mavanthoor Subbayya Alva and Domakke Alva of Eryabeedu in Modankapu village of Bantwal taluk.

Bagalkot, April 4: A COVID-19 positive patient passed away in Karnataka's Bagalkot on Friday, taking the total number of deaths in the state to four, informed the Deputy Commissioner of Bagalkot.

The total number of coronavirus cases in the country now stands at 2650 including 184 people who have been discharged or cured or migrated, and 68 deaths, as per the data provided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Kalaburagi, Jan 21: A team of bomb disposal squad along with sniffer dog visited Kalaburagi Railway Station on Tuesday morning.

In the wake of the bomb found at Mangalore Airport on Monday morning, the team visited the railway station as a precautionary measure.

Chmarajanagara, Feb 23: In order to control and keep a tab on the activities within the forest area and after the bitter experiences with frequent forest fires, like the one in Bandipur Tiger Reserve last year Karnataka Forest Department officials have decided to use drones to prevent the occurrences of such wildfires, and to use drones to nab trouble makers and take timely action to put out or prevent forest fires, especially during the summer season.

The department of forest has been working on using drones and setting up a centre in Mysuru or Chamarajanagar to monitor three crucial tiger reserves — Bandipur, Nagarhole, and BRT.
