VHP reminds Modi of 1989 BJP pledge on Bill for Temple; slams Rahul, Mamata

New Delhi, Oct 29: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Monday said it was "disappointed" that the crucial hearing on the years old Ram Mandir-Babri Masjid dispute was deferred and maintained that the apex court seems to be "avoiding" to take up the title dispute for urgent hearing.

Shortly after the three-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi deferred the matter for hearing to January next year, senior VHP leader Arun Kumar also directed his tirade against Congress President Rahul Gandhi and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee and said it is high time for "each of them to take a stand and be accountable".

"What is pending in the Supreme Court is a title dispute and when Justice Dipak Misra said that and dismissed all the intervention applications, we were hopeful that now the Supreme Court will hear the case and decide it. That would have been a great thing," senior VHP leader Arun Kumar told reporters here.

"We are disappointed that this did not happen," he told television channels.

To a pointed question on what would the VHP do if the government does not bring an Ordinance, Mr Kumar said: "We believe this government (led by PM Narendra Modi) is a government of Ram Bhakts. The BJP has passed a resolution for legislation in Palampur session in 1989, they have been our associates in this fight (for Ram Temple), so we look forward to them to implement their own manifesto".

Answering questions on the role of non-BJP political parties, he said: "It will be time for all the political parties to stand up and be counted.'

' We know a President of a major political party who is said to wearing a Janyu goes to Kailash Mansorovar in an advertised Yatra. In his election rallies, he is described as Ram Bhakt," he said in reference to the Congress President.

Making a veiled attack on West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Ms Banerjee, the VHP leader said "There is another leader who distributes money to all puja pandals, it would be time for each of them to take a stand and be counted".

He said an Ordinance or the legislative measure will be a genuine alternative route to resolve the years old dispute.

"Making a legislation is another way, a lawful way of sorting out this problem.... Therefore, the demand for a legislation is in no way any disrespect to the Supreme Court," Mr Kumar said.

He said when the then Chief Justice Dipak Misra was heading the bench and hearing the case, the Hindu saints at a meeting in Udupi had decided to "wait" for the apex court's ruling.

"Justice Misra retired in October and therefore we found that the wait was not worth it...," he said adding the new Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi has also deferred the matter.

He pointed out that: "The Supreme Court which had time to sit on the night (on other cases) and late in the evening has somehow avoided to hear the appeal of a great public importance and which affects the tranquility, amicability and other things".

In that context, he said, "Therefore, there comes the other lawful way of demanding a legislation has been preferred".

Attari, Mar 19: At least 29 Indians, who had gone to Dubai to watch a cricket match which was called off later, on Wednesday night returned to India through the land transit route of Attari-Wagah border here.

Earlier, when they entered India after being cleared by the Pakistan Immigration Authority, they were detained at Attari border, as they were not having requisite permission on their passport to return to India through Pakistan.

According to officials, they had earlier flown to Dubai from New Delhi to watch a Pakistan League Cricket match there.

The match, however, was aborted and they decided to return India via Pakistan. They took a flight to Pakistan and after landing there, they took land route to reach Attari-Wagah border.

All were cleared by Indian immigration authority after being allowed by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

Amritsar Civil Surgeon Dr Prabdeep Kaur Johal said that by 9.30 PM all the Indian nationals were not handed over to the medical team for checkup.

She said if anyone of them are found with any symptoms of the virus, they would be admitted to Amritsar Government Hospital or else they would be allowed to continue their journey to Delhi or elsewhere.

Patna, Jan 12: Prashant Kishor, national vice-president of the Janata Dal (United), a key ally of the BJP-led NDA, has thanked Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi and former AICC chief Rahul Gandhi for their support in opposing CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) and NRC (National Register of Citizens).

Perceived as one of the closest associates of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who is also the party’s national president, PK (as Prashant is fondly called) also assured the two top Congress leaders that the contentious legislation would not be implemented in Bihar where JD (U) is ruling the State with the support of the BJP.

“I join my voice with all to thank #Congress leadership for their formal and unequivocal rejection of #CAA_NRC. Both @rahulgandhi and @priyankagandhi deserve special thanks for their efforts on this count….also would like to reassure to all – CAA/NRC won’t be implemented in Bihar,” tweeted PK on Sunday.

The development assumes significance as a day back, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, chaired by Sonia Gandhi, had strongly opposed CAA/NRC/NPR as it was aimed at “sinister design of the present regime to divide Indian people into religious lines.”

The latest tweet by PK is also being seen as a rebuff to the BJP, which again recently reiterated that “the BJP should project its own chief ministerial candidate during the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections.”

The JD (U) had taken umbrage over such provocative statements by BJP leaders and asked the saffron camp to rein in its ‘loudmouths’ as BJP chief Amit Shah had already made it clear that the next Assembly polls in Bihar would be fought under the leadership of Nitish.

Of late, PK has been quite vocal about his opposition to the Centre’s policies, particularly the contentious issues of NRC and CAA. Besides, he even dubbed senior BJP leader Sushil Modi as the man who became Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister due to ‘circumstances’ as the BJP was decisively decimated during the 2015 Assembly elections.

Nitish never reprimanded PK for his jibe against Modi, thereby giving rise to speculations whether Bihar was again heading for a political churning ahead of Assembly polls slated for October this year.

New Delhi, Jul 29: Coronavirus infections in India continue to mount as the country's total case tally crossed the 15-lakh mark.

India added 48,513 fresh cases in 24 hours, taking the total tally to over 15.3 lakh, according to the Health Ministry’s 8 a.m. update on July 29.

Key Figures

Total number of confirmed coronavirus cases: 15,31,669
Active cases: 5,09,447
Cured/discharged/migrated: 9,88,029
Deaths: 34,193
Number of fresh cases in 24 hours: 48,513
One-day recoveries: 35,175
One-day deaths: 768
India’s coronavirus epidemic is growing at the fastest pace in the world, increasing 20% over the last week, according to Bloomberg’s Coronavirus Tracker. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are among the states where the maximum number of daily cares are being reported.

Fresh cases continued to come in at a heightened pace, hovering just below 50,000 for the last six days.

Moderna Inc.’s vaccine candidate against Covid-19 protected against the virus in a trial that inoculated 16 monkeys, an encouraging step on the path to a defense for humans against the pandemic. Pfizer Inc., however, is preparing for the novel coronavirus to endure, leading to long-term demand for a seasonal shot to protect against Covid-19.

“There is a likely scenario that either the vaccine’s immunity will not be lasting forever,” said Chief Executive Officer Albert Bourla in an interview Tuesday, “or that the virus will mutate, or that the virus will find ways to come back again and again.”

Even as the transmission rate of Covid-19 remains high in India, the pace of recovery has risen too. On Wednesday, India reported its third day of over 35,000 recoveries.

Global Update

Flare-ups in virus cases from Hong Kong to Europe are proving difficult for policy makers to wrangle. The U.S. neared 150,000 deaths from Covid-19, even as daily infections slowed in some hard-hit states. China reported 101 new cases, up from 68 a day earlier, with 98 of the total from local infections, mostly in Xinjiang.

Philippine health authorities warned that hospitals and infirmaries risk getting overwhelmed.

Globally, confirmed Covid-19 cases have topped 16.6 million with over 658,000 dead.
