Video showing Indian worker being beaten in Saudi goes viral

Riyadh, Sep 21: The Saudi government on Monday maintained that a video going viral online and showing a man beating up an Indian construction worker was not of a Saudi national but a national of another Arab country.

The video uploaded on YouTube showed a man described as a "Saudi engineer" beating up the worker engaged in the expansion work on the Grand Mosque in Makkah. In the two-minute-long video, the worker is heard pleading for mercy, but the assailant continues to kick and hit him.

The assaulter also spits on the Indian worker after repeatedly slapping him.

The video was shared by Canadian journalist Tarek Fatah on his Facebook page.

According to Abdullah Al Olayyan, director general of the Saudi labour ministry, inspection teams visited the site of the incident to find out the details about the incident, according to the "Sabaq" newspaper.

Al Olayyan said an investigation into the circumstances of the incident included those responsible at the site, the engineer who committed the assault and the worker who was beaten. He said that the engineer has admitted to what was shown in the video.

Al Olayyan added that the engineer, who is an "Arab immigrant", apologised to the worker who accepted his apology. He pointed out that the case will be pursued by the concerned authorities to complete the necessary action.

One report said the engineer was an Egyptian national.

According to sources, the video has triggered a debate in Saudi Arabia on the rights of expatriate workers.

Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 22:An accused in a case registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act jumped into the sea on Wednesday morning when he was taken for evidence collection at Kasaba in Kasargode district, police said.

Accused Mahesh was arrested following a complaint by his neighbour on Tuesday evening.

The police said that they took the accused to the seashore to collect evidence in the case when Mahesh jumped into the sea. Two police officials too jumped in after him to catch hold of him but could not locate Mahesh.

Later, swimmers were deployed to try and locate the missing man.

Meerut: The licence of a private hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut has been suspended after a video showing its staff member providing fake Covid-19 report had gone viral.

"A video had gone viral in Meerut. We have registered a case in this regard. We have suspended the licence of the nursing home. Today, we have sealed it also. Strict action will be taken against anybody who will do something like this in this time of crisis,” said Anil Dhingra, District Magistrate, Meerut.

In the video, the person can be heard saying that they provide Covid-19 negative report for Rs 2,500, Dhingra stated.

Meerut CMO Rajkumar said, “In the video, a man from the hospital can be heard saying that he can arrange COVID-19 negative report and the person can get operation or other things done. We have identified the man. We have suspended the licence of the hospital and an FIR has been registered.”

Amaravati, Jul 31: Nine people have died after allegedly consuming sanitiser in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh today, the police said.

Prakasam district Superintendent of Police Siddharth Kaushal said the people had been consuming sanitiser for the past few days, mixing it with water and soft drinks.

"We are also investigating whether they laced the sanitiser with any other toxic substances," the official said.

"Their family members say these people have been consuming sanitiser for the past ten days. We are sending the sanitiser stocks, being sold in the area, for examination," he added.

Kurichedu in Prakasam district has been under lockdown due to rise in coronavirus cases and hence, liquor shops have also been shut since the past few days.

Habitual drinkers were said to be consuming sanitisers that have alcohol content, apart from illicitly distilled arrack.

The police said two beggars near a temple were the first to fall victim on Thursday night. While one of them was found dead at the spot, another died in the government hospital in Darsi town, they said.

A third person was also taken to the Darsi hospital late on Thursday night after he fell unconscious but he was declared brought dead. Six others who fell ill after allegedly consuming sanitiser, died this morning.

Others who fell ill after consuming sanitiser are undergoing treatment at their residences in the village, the police added.
