Vidhana Soudha jubilee fete: JDS legislators skip photo session with President

Bengaluru, Oct 25: Janata Dal (Secular) MLAs stayed away from the photo session of legislators of both the houses with President Ram Nath Kovind in protest against not including the regional party leaders’ names in his speech during the diamond jubilee celebration of the Vidhana Soudha on Wednesday.

Photo session was an important event in the series of programmes planned by the State Legislature on occasion of the Diamond Jubilee celebration of state's seat of power - Vidhana Soudha.

Not referring names of former chief minister H.D. Kumaraswamy irked the JD(S) leaders. President Ram Nath Kovind, who referred to several former chief ministers in his speech, later spontaneously mentioned the name of Mr. Deve Gowda, though it was omitted in the written speech. 

This was taken note by JD(S) legislator Y.S.V. Datta, who expressed his displeasure over the omission of Mr. Deve Gowda’s name in the written speech. Responding to this, the President said: “Mr. Deve Gowda is my good friend.”

Senior legislator Basavaraj Horatti was also upset that protocol had not been followed, while allocating seats for the photo session. JD(S) leaders decided against taking part in the photo session. JD(S) leaders were upset from the beginning. They strongly protested against the State legislature's plan to distribute gold biscuits to all legislators commemorating the jubilee celebrations. They also decided against taking part in the lunch organised at Banquet Hall in Vidhana Soudha. This was following the direction of the party's state president Mr. Kumaraswamy.

Accusing the Speaker and Chairman of Legislative Assembly and Council respectively of not following the protocol, Mr. Horatti told media persons that while the President mentioned names of all the chief ministers, including that of Jagadish Shettar, in the address of Joint Session, Mr. Kumaraswamy was omitted. “How can the name of a former prime minister from Karnataka be omitted in the written speech?” he asked.

Mr. Horatti said: “We have not boycotted the photo session... we stayed away just to express our discontent over the treatment meted to JD(S) and its leaders.”

JD(S) MLC Ramesh Babu said that the organisers did not have the courtesy to offer a chair to former chief minister Mr. Kumaraswamy, following which the disgruntled party legislators “decided to boycott the photo session”.

Mysuru, Jan 11: Accusing the Congress and other opposition parties of pursuing “vote bank politics” on the Citizenship (Amendment ) Act (CAA), Kannada littérateur and Saraswathi Samman awardee S L Byrappa accused the party of misleading the people on the issue.

Speaking to media persons here on Friday, Mr Bhyrappa said that Congress was adopting the divide and rule policy of the British, who had created a rift between the Hindus and the Muslims to break their unity during the freedom struggle.

Mangaluru, May 18: A boat which was engaged in an operation to fix the pipe relating to the reverse osmosis plant of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) at Tannibavi turned turtle due to strong wind.

Two workers had gone missing in the incident that occurred on Sunday late evening, and one of them was rescued shortly thereafter.

The person who has not yet been found happens to be Pandu Pist from Mumbai. The person who was rescued was Santosh from Dakshina Kannada.

Three workers from West Bengal who were facing danger were also rescued.

Mangaluru, May 20: The local unit of Bharatiya Janata Party has defended the delay in repatriation of coastal Kannadigas from Middle Eastern countries saying that it is impossible to bring all expatriate together at a time when covid-19 cases are continuing to spike in the region. 

Addressing a press conference, Sudarshan M, president of Dakshina Kannada unit of BJP said that the entire district administration was working as a team under the leadership local MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and district minister Kota Shrinivas Poojary and seven BJP MLAs in this critical juncture.

“Without any bias, we also have reached out to the needs of people of Mangaluru assembly constituency represented by former minister and Congress MLA U T Khader,” he said, adding that his party will not forget Indian expatriates in the Gulf too. 

Replying to the charge of not catering to the interests of Kannadigas stranded in the Middle East by way of arranging special flights, Sudarshan said this is part of a well-thought-out move to bring them in batches.

“It is impossible to bring back all Kannadigas stranded in Middle East all of a sudden. Their repatriation will be in phased manner based on facilities available in the district,” he said.

“The district authorities have created healthcare and quarantine facilities for a limited number, be it at Covid-19 hospital or institutional quarantine, and bringing them together will create logistical problems,” he said.
