Mysuru, Oct 11: Sleuths of the Forest department have captured two tigresses within a span of 24 hours in separate operations in Mysuru district. Both the captured animals have been shifted to Mysuru Zoo for treatment.
While an adult tigress, which had attacked a woman at Dodda Baragi village in HD Kote taluk on Sunday afternoon was caught on Monday after nearly six hours of intensive combing operation, another tigress lurking lurk outside Nagarahole Tiger Reserve was captured in HD Kote taluk on Tuesday.
On Sunday, Mahadevamma, 40, a dailywage labourer working in a cotton field, was attacked by the tigress, leaving her with injuries on her hands and legs. Forest officials and staff led by Hediyala range assistant conservator of forests Paramesh K started the combing operation in the forest around noon on Monday in the area. Within a few minutes, forest staff noticed the carcasses of two calves, one half-eaten by a wild animal.
A few minutes later, they noticed a tigress a few metres away in an agriculture field. A forest officer said that even after it noticed them. The tigress did not run into the nearby woods or tried to attack them indicating it was badly injured. Around 5.45pm, it was tranquillized and captured.
On the other hand another tigress had attacked cattle on Sunday causing panic among villagers, said S Manikandan, director of Nagarahole tiger reserve
"We began monitoring the movement of the wild animal three days ago. The tiger made a kill on Tuesday afternoon too. So, after discussing with senior officials, the permission to dart the animal was sought," Manikandan said.
The tigress was found in a field at Naganahalli village near Taraka dam, fall ing under Antharasanthe forest range in HD Kote taluk. As news of the operation spread, hundreds of villagers from Naganahalli turned up, swamping the elephants carrying the gunmen and forest personnel scouring the field.
There was fear, but excitement too. Villagers said the tigress had entered their village a month ago and was regularly killing cattle.Many were afraid to go to the fields as the big cat was lurking around.
