Violence erupts in Bantwal: One killed, stones pelted at SDPI protesters

Mangaluru, Nov 12: Two days after Sangh Parivar activists unleashed violence in Madikeri during the birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan, unexpected communal violence erupted in BC Road and other parts of Bantwal taluk in Dakshina Kannada on Thursday.

murder 3Security has been tightened in BC Road, Kaikamba and surrounding areas following the clash that culminated in baton charge by the police and subsequent murder of an innocent youth by unidentified miscreants.

A group of miscreants, who came in a car, attacked two friends belonging to different communities with lethal weapons at Manihalli near Batnwal and fled the spot. Harish Poojary, 28, a resident of Navuru village, collapsed and died after the attack. His friend Sameeullah, who tried to rescue him, was also stabbed. He was rushed to a hospital and his condition continues to be critical.

Attack on SDPI protesters

The trouble started when, a group of trouble-mongers, allegedly belonging to Sangh Parivar, pelted stones at the activists of Social Democrat Party of India, who staged a demonstration in front of taluk office in BC Road to register their protest against Madikeri violence.

It is learnt that the Sangh Parivar activists were enraged when one of the speakers at the protest criticized RSS and one of its local leaders.

A tense atmosphere prevailed in BC Road, Kaikamba and surrounding areas in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada district following the clash that culminated in baton charge by the police.

Shopkeepers in BC Road observed self-imposed bandh after miscreants pelted stones at a few shops causing damages. Dozens of people suffered injuries during the stone-pelting and subsequent baton charge by the police.

According to eyewitness accounts, stones were thrown just after SDPI activist Haneef finished his speech. Stones were thrown from buildings behind the Tahsildar Office, eyewitnesses said. This resulted in the protesters running in the direction from where the stones were thrown.

Immediately, additional police force was deployed and the angry protesters were dispersed after baton charge.

Superintendent of Police Sharanappa S.D. and other police officers, who are camping at B.C. Road, have brought the situation under control.

The police have launched a search for those who threw stones at the protest meet. The police are verifying whether the attack on the motorcyclists was an isolated one or linked with the stone-throwing incident.

Murder

At 7.30 p.m. Harish and Samiulla were attacked by a group of persons who came in a car. Reports reaching here said that Harish and Samiulla, construction labourers, were returning after playing cricket. They had stopped their motorcycle at a shop and were having cool drinks. The unidentified persons attacked the two with sharp objects and fled the spot. Harish died while being brought to hospital. Samiulla has been admitted to a private hospital in Mangaluru.  More details are awaited.

Bengaluru, July 28: Former prime minister and JD(S) chief H D Deve Gowda today threatened to launch a state-wide agitation in against the amendments made to the Karnataka Land Reforms Act.

Gowda’s opposition to the new law comes even as Congress leader Siddaramaiah is also doggedly pursuing it.

Demanding that the state government immediately rollback the ordinance empowering these amendments, the octogenarian leader said he personally would take to streets if the government failed to budge.

The B S Yediyurappa government has liberalised the land reforms law by removing restrictions on non-agriculturists from purchasing and owning farm lands.

The government has also amended the APMC Act and has tweaked labour laws, which are all “against the interest of the state and must be rolled back,” Gowda said.

Speaking to reporters here, Gowda stated that he had already written thrice to Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa in this regard. "The ordinances have to be taken back. The amendments to Karnataka Land Reforms Act, by repealing sections 79-A, B and C, is an anti-farmer move. The APMC Act amendment, too, is against the interest of the state. The government has failed to speak about the impact of these amendments," said Gowda, who is now a Rajya Sabha member.

Elaborating on the amendment to the Land Reform Act, the JD(S) patriarch opined that by throwing open agricultural land ownership to anybody at all, the government was only helping real estate developers while pushing farmers into a “vulnerable” situation.

Amidst all this, there are now reports of funds misappropriation in Covid-19 relief measures and in procurement of medical equipment, he said, adding that it seemed like only the corrupt became stronger over time.

Further, Gowda lambasted both national parties for creating political unrest, referring to the ongoing political crisis in Rajasthan and the recent developments in Madhya Pradesh. However, he added that he would not wish to dwell on it much, while emphasising that his focus was primarily on strengthening his own party at this point in time.

New Delhi, Jan 26: On the occasion of the 71st Republic Day, Karnataka state's tableau depicted the philosophy of Basaveshwara and the concept of Anubhava Mantapa (Centre for Experience), which was the socio-religious centre that existed in the present-day Basava Kalyana of Bidar district in Karnataka.

It is regarded as the first religious parliament in the history of mankind.

This 12th-century centre has a special significance in the history of humanity, as it represents composite culture, philosophy, spirituality, equality among other universal human values.

These values were propagated by the saint and social reformer- Basaveshwara and other sharanas- followers of Basava philosophy of the socio-religious movement.

It is significant that representatives of Anubhava Mantapa were nominated based on their spiritual attainment, regardless of caste, class and sect they belonged and thus discarded the differentiation of human beings as higher or lower, on the basis of birth, occupation and gender.

The front part of the tableau has the replica of Basaveshwara preaching his most cherished value - "Work is Worship".

For Republic Day Parade 2020, a total of 56 tableaux proposals (32 from states/UTs and 24 from Ministries/Departments) were received. Out of these, 22 were shortlisted for participation in the Republic Day Parade 2020.

Mangaluru, Apr 1: Dakshina Kannada District in-charge minister Kota Srinivas Poojary on Tuesday announced that essential shops including grocery stores, fruits and vegetable shops will be allowed to open from Wednesday between 0700 hrs to 1200 hrs across the district.

Speaking at a press conference, he said that Milk, Medical, Gas distribution, Petrol Bunks, Banks will be opened as usual, he informed adding that Central Market and the Suratkal Market will remain closed.

With the Dakshin Kannada district administration relaxing the lockdown from 0600 hrs to 1500 hrs to purchase essential commodities, panic-stricken citizens rushed to the shops early in the morning itself.
