Virat has transformed Chahal into a brave bowler: Daniel Vettori

February 9, 2018

St Moritz (Switzerland), Feb 9: Former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori feels India skipper Virat Kohli has instilled a lot of courage in wrist spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, calling it the primary reason for his phenomenal success in limited-overs cricket.

Vettori is currently the coach of IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore, which Kohli captains.

Chahal is currently the leading wicket-taker in the ongoing ODI series against South Africa with 11 scalps in three games.

Speaking to news agency on the sidelines of the 'St Moritz Ice Cricket Tournament' here, Vettori attributed Chahal's success to the risks he took during the IPL where he operated on a bowler's graveyard like Chinnaswamy Stadium.

"Yuzi is a brave bowler and it's not easy when you are playing a lot of IPL matches at a small ground like the Chinnaswamy, which is conducive to batting," Vettori said.

"He is still prepared to attack the batsmen and this is a mindset that Virat has instilled in him while leading him to the RCB and now India. Surely, it's paying dividends as we can see," he added.

A lot has been spoken about Kohli's leadership style and what Vettori finds impressive is the Indian captain's receptive attitude.

"The good thing is that I have played with Virat for RCB before taking up the coach's role. So, we have, at one level, grown together as cricketers but the best part about Virat is that he is prepared to listen and learn," he said.

"So, I really enjoy the two sides of him -- aggression to win on the field, that desperation and off the field -- sit back and try to soak in information, not only about his own game but also about the team's performance," he added.

The demand for quality wrist spinners has increased in international cricket but Vettori feels it is all about who is good in certain formats during a particular phase.

Asked if leg-spinners are more in vogue compared to finger spinners, Vettori replied: "I don't think there has been a shift as it is happening for a while now. It's shifting towards whoever is good at a particular phase.

"R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have dominated Test cricket for an extended period of time and they continue to do that. Similarly, a Chahal or a Karn Sharma or Piyush Chawla have dominated the IPL space and they continue to do that."

Vettori was also against the generalisation that batsmen nowadays are not able to pick up wrist spinners easily.

"Some batsmen do and some don't. For me, I sit back and enjoy whenever a leg-spinner or for that matter, any spin bowler does well and appreciate their skill level.

"Chahal is a very talented, skilful and accurate bowler. That package is tough to deal with as a batsman in any condition," he said.

"I am so happy for Yuzi that he is not only performing in India but outside the sub-continent as well."

Los Angeles, Feb 14: Tributes to the late Kobe Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers legend who died last month in a helicopter crash, will play a major role in Sunday's 69th NBA All-Star Game.

This year's annual showcase of league talent will be played in Chicago and feature numerous nods to Bryant, a five-time NBA champion who also matched a league record with four NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player awards.

Bryant, an 18-time NBA All-Star, died at age 41 on January 26 in a crash near Los Angeles that also took the life of his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others.

All-Star teams guided by LeBron James of the Lakers and Greek star Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks will compete to win each of the first three quarters, which will all start 0-0 and last 12 minutes.

At the start of the fourth quarter, the clock will be turned off and a final target score will be established by taking the leading club's cumulative score through the first three quarters and adding 24 points -- the number representing the jersey number worn by Bryant for the final 10 seasons of his NBA career.

The first team to reach the cumulative target score will win the NBA All-Star Game.

All-Star Game jerseys will also honor Bryant and his daughter.

Team Giannis players will wear jersey number 24 in tribute to Kobe while Team LeBron players will wear jersey number two, the number his daughter wore when playing youth basketball.

Both teams will wear jersey patches displaying nine stars, representing the nine people who were killed in the crash.

Academy Award-winning actress and Grammy Award-winning singer Jennifer Hudson, a Chicago native, will perform a special tribute to Bryant, his daughter and the others who were killed in the crash. Her performance will begin the night ahead of the player introductions.

James and Antetokounmpo each chose their squads from available starters and reserves voted and selected to the All-Star contest.

Team LeBron starters will include James, his Lakers teammate Anthony Davis, NBA scoring leader James Harden of Houston, Kawhi Leonard of the Los Angeles Clippers and Slovenian guard Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks.

Team Giannis starters include the Greek big man, Cameroon stars Joel Embiid of Philadelphia and Pascal Siakam of Toronto and guards Kemba Walker of Boston and Trae Young of Atlanta.

A record eight All-Star Game players from outside the United States also include Frenchman Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz on Team Giannis and Team LeBron reserves Ben Simmons of Australia and the Philadelphia 76ers, Lithuanian Domantas Sabonis of Indiana and Serbian Nikola Jokic of Denver.

London, Mar 19: Talking about the break in cricketing activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic, South Africa pacer Dale Steyn said that the disease seems to be to the only topic of conversation these days.

"I don't know how to describe it. Doesn't matter where you go, everyone is talking about it - whether it is on an airplane or you are just popping into a grocery store. It just seems like it is the only topic of conversation," ESPN Cricinfo quoted Steyn as saying.

"Yeah, it's so strange. Normally if I am on holiday I'll be planning a fishing trip or a surfing trip. At the moment I am just chilling at home," he added.

Steyn was last seen in action in the Pakistan Super League where he took two wickets in two matches.

When asked whether he has enough hand sanitizers, he replied: "We just decided that stockpiling is definitely not the way to go. It is not fair on everybody who needs that stuff. I went to the grocery store the other day and everyone had bought all the toilet paper. We have what we need, and when that runs out, that runs out, and we need to go and get some more".

"We didn't feel it was necessary to go and absolutely just, like, zombie our lives up. There's other people that live on a day-to-day basis. They are not going to get all of that stuff, so we thought it was best not to do that".

Steyn also had a message for the fans, "Stay healthy, wash your hands, look after yourself, don't be greedy. Right now they are saying old people are really struggling, so if in a position to help, rather help them than help yourself. Pretty simple, really."

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the ODI series between India-South Africa and Australia-New Zealand have been postponed.

The start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has also been postponed until April 15.

Cricket South Africa has suspended all forms of cricket for 60 days while Cricket Australia has advised all its employees to work from home.
