Vishveshwara Hegde Kageri elected Speaker of Karnataka Legislative Assembly

Bengaluru, Jul 31: Six-time MLA and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Vishveshwar Hegde Kageri was unanimously elected as the new Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly here on Wednesday.

The name of the Kageri to the Speaker’s post was proposed by the Chief minister B S Yediyurappa and seconded by the BJP member Basvaraj Bommai.

The Opposition Congress and the JD(S) did not put up any candidate for the post, paving the way for the unanimous election. Deputy Speaker Krishna Reddy put the proposal of Kageri’s candidature to vote in the house and it was passed without any opposition.
Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa and the Opposition leader and Congress member Siddaramaiah led Kageri to the Speaker’s Chair.

Later speaking on the election Chief minister B S Yediyurappa said Kageri, one of the senior most BJP MLAs, brings his rich experience to the post.

Siddaramaiah, who also welcomed the Election of Kageri as the new Speaker, expected that he (Kageri) will run the house without any party affiliation.

Former Speaker K Ramesh Kumar, BJP leaders K S Eshwarappa, Former Chief minister Jagadish Shettar, JD(S) member K Kumaraswamy also spoke on the new speaker, and promised to extend all co-operation in the running the house smoothly.

Newsroom, Jun 16: A 35-year-old Kannada lecturer died in a motorbike accident at Tumkuru in Karnataka.

The deceased is K N Swamy, who was a guest lecturer in Department of Kannada at Central University of Kerala located at Periya in Kasaragod district.

The accident occurred on Sunday afternoon when he was riding his motorbike.

Swamy was also a writer and poet in Kannada.

Shivamogga, May 21: A quarantine facility at Bapuji Nagar in Shivamogga on Wednesday evening was vandalised, by a group of people. leading to chaos.

The police had to resort to baton-charge to control the situation.

Locals were opposing the facility, which is being used to isolate travellers from different states in the view of coronavirus.

Deputy Commissioner KB Sivakumar said that the police department will investigate and book a case against the protesters.

Mangaluru, Mar 25: Fishing boats returned to the old Port in Mangaluru after the government prohibited deep-sea fishing till further orders on Wednesday to prevent the assembly of a large gathering here in the wake of the novel coronavirus pandemic. 

According to officials, deep-sea fishing activities result in the gathering of a large number of people and is much against the government's direction on maintaining social distancing. 

According to the Department, the 42-Km coastline in Dakshina Kannada hass 57 purse seine boats, 1,270 trawl boats, 1,483 gillnet boats, 549 other mechanised boats.
