Mangaluru, Oct 4: People of Dakshina Kannada have urged the government to give priority to health, education, science, tourism, agriculture, road and railway infrastructure and communal harmony to see the coastal district comprehensively developed in the years to come.

Participants of the workshop organised by the Dakshina Kannada district administration about 'Nava Karnataka 2025' (Vision 2025), a long-term comprehensive development plan which the chief minister Siddaramaiah-led government has planned to implement in next seven years, also suggested government to empowering the younger generation with rational thinking.

Speaking on the occasion, Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo said that there was a need to understand the strengths of the district and work on improving them. He said that sectors such as tourism, education and healthcare are some of the strengths of the district. In addition to this, Dakshina Kannada is also known for its ports and fisheries, commerce and industries, and horticulture sectors.

District in-charge Minister B. Ramanath Rai inaugurated the consultative meeting in the morning while Chief Minister’s Principal Secretary Tushar Girinath gave an overview of Vision 2025 concept. Issues were broadly classified under five themes. Eminent persons from respective fields and students were part of groups, each group having about 20 people. The groups, after detailed discussions, presented suggestions in the afternoon.

The former Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Jeevan Saldanha presented the overview of urban theme and said that there should be all-inclusive industrial townships. Communal harmony is a must for the overall development of the region even as strict compliance should be ensured to building by-laws.

Children should be involved in social service such as the NSS and physical activities right from school and college days, said retired professor in community development Rita Noronha, who led the group on social justice. Education has to be inclusive with gender and social sensitisation. Responding, Mr. Girinath agreed that the higher education sector lacked standardisation and the Knowledge Commission was working on it.

Special Agriculture Economic Zone, green army to address labour shortage, cold storage facility, scientific pricing for produces, value addition to jackfruit, agro-tourism, agro-fest and solar-enabled fish drying were some of the suggestions given by the group on agriculture led by Shivakumar Magada, Professor of Aquatic Biology, College of Fisheries, Mangaluru.

On the other hand, the group on industries led by industrialist Prakash Kalbavi suggested that Dakshina Kannada be made a hub of knowledge activities, including IT and ITES, by providing adequate facilities. More mega industries should come up in the region, it said and urged the government to thoroughly revamp port connectivity. The district has the potential to become the tourism gateway of the State, it said. Prajna Counselling Director Hilda Rayappan speaking for the group on governance said that Sakala should be extended to all departments. Policing should be people-friendly while law and order and investigation should be separated, she said.

Bengaluru, Jul 1: The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert and forecasted heavy rains for three coastal districts and 12 more in the south interior Karnataka region, an official said on Tuesday afternoon.

"Thunderstorm with lightning is likely to occur at isolated places over south interior Karnataka from Tuesday to Wednesday," said a Met official.

For Bengaluru city, the Met department has forecast a generally cloudy sky with light rain for the next three days.

Coastal Karnataka -- Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts have been issued a yellow alert for the next two days with thundershowers and gusty winds.

Winds blowing at speed of 40-50 km per hour are expected on the coast and the Met department warned fishermen against venturing into the sea.

Meanwhile, heavy showers on Sunday night in Vijayapura district gave rise to flash floods in the Doni river and Sogali stream.

An overflowing Doni river submerged the Talikote - Hadaginal bridge, a remnant from the colonial era, and also submerged some agricultural lands. Only recently, these agricultural lands were sown with toor dal plants.

Similarly, many SSLC students also struggled to cross the bridge to reach their examination centres on Monday.

Many houses were also flooded due to the rainfall at Nalatwad and Talikote taluk. Muddebihal, Basavana Bagewadi and Sindagi taluks also witnessed heavy rainfall.

A 40-year-old farmer from Dharwad district was washed away in the Tuppari Halla stream, which is prone to flood during the monsoon season.

Likewise, a truck carrying cotton also got washed away in a stream in Yadgir district.

"There is an offshore trough and a circulation, because of which rain will continue in the coastal area. Only Malnad has not got sufficient rain this year. Probably after two days, Malnad may get some rains," Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) Director Srinivas Reddy said. Otherwise, entire state got normal rainfall, said Reddy, though it is not active over Malnad.

Dubai, Apr 11: An Indian expat in the UAE is facing police action for allegedly insulting Islam on social media in response to a Facebook post on the coronavirus, according to a media report.

Rakesh B Kitturmath, who worked as a team leader at Emrill Services, an integrated facilities management (FM) headquartered in Dubai, was sacked on Thursday after his post sparked outrage on social media, the Gulf News reported.

“Kitturmath’s employment stands terminated with immediate effect. He will be handed over to Dubai Police. We have a zero-tolerance policy towards such hate crimes,” said Stuart Harrison, CEO of Emrill Services.

"As an organisation, we have worked hard over the years to embrace diversity and create a culture of inclusion, where every nationality, religion and background is welcomed and celebrated. We have a strict social media policy for our employees to ensure they respect our values, both inside and outside of work," the newspaper quoted Harrison as saying.

Harrison said they are trying to find out if Kitturmath was still in the UAE, according to the report.

“We have over 8,500 employees so this may take a while. That said, we have fired him. If he’s still in the country, he will be handed over to Dubai Police,” he said.

Originally from Ranebennuri, Karnataka, Kitturmath joins an ever-growing list of Indian ex-pats who have landed in trouble for alleged Islamophobic messages in recent days.

Earlier this week, Abu Dhabi resident Mitesh Udeshi was sacked for posting a cartoon mocking Islam on his Facebook page while a police complaint was filed against Sameer Bhandari of Future Vision Events & Weddings’ in Dubai after he asked a Muslim job seeker from India to go back to Pakistan.

The UAE outlaws all religious or racial discrimination under a legislation passed in 2015.

The anti-discrimination/anti-hatred law prohibits all acts “that stoke religious hatred and/or which insult religion through any form of expression, be it speech or the written word, books, pamphlets or via online media.”
