VVIP chopper scam case: Former Air force chief SP Tyagi granted bail

December 26, 2016

New Delhi, Dec 26: The Patiala House Court bench on Monday granted bail to former Indian Air Force chief SP Tyagi arrested in AgustaWestland chopper deal case.

tyagiThe court has further asked 72-year-old Tyagi not to leave the country and deposit Rs 2 lakh security bond .

A court also said it would pass order, on January 4, on the bail plea of Tyagi's cousin Sanjeev Tyagi and Delhi-based advocate Gautam Khaitan and others arrested in AgustaWestland chopper deal case.

Special CBI Judge Arvind Kumar on December 23 had reserved the order on the bail applications of Tyagi, his cousin Sanjeev Tyagi and a Delhi-based lawyer Gautam Khaitan.

Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had opposed the bail plea of accused saying they are persons of high ranking and if released on bail, they "may influence witnesses, destroy evidences and hamper the ongoing probe which is at a very crucial stage.

The agency had also told the court that the investigation is going on in the case and CBI was getting support from other countries also. "We have evidences where the meetings unofficially took place for the purpose of crime," it said.

The Central investigation agency had also asked for more time for the further questioning of SP Tyagi in the AgustaWestland chopper scam case.

Tyagi's defence also maintained that he needed to be away on medical grounds.

On December 17, a Delhi court had extended the judicial custody of SP Tyagi and all the other accused in the AgustaWestland scam till December 30.

Tyagi's defence counsel while seeking bail told court that former IAF chief was booked and arrested in the case without any basis.
