Mangaluru, Dec 12: Hundreds of people belonging to various secular and progressive organizations and political parties took part in the much awaited amity walk on Tuesday under the leadership of Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai.

Mr Rai formally inaugurated the walk at Farangipete in Bantwal taluk at around 9 a.m. by releasing balloons into the air in the presence of multilingual actor Prakash Raj, former minister Amarnath Shetty and others.

The walk titled ‘samarasya nadige souhardateyedege’ will cover about 22 km on NH-75 and culminate in Mani at 5 p.m. today.

Speaking after launching the event, Mr Rai said that those who believe in secular principles are participating in the walk. He also vowed to defeat communal forces in Dakshina Kannada.

“This walk is a symbolic agitation. The peace-loving people of this district will definitely foil the attempts of communal forces to divide the society on communal lines,” he said.

Mr Rai said that the intention of the walk was to create communal harmony in the district and not to create any problem. Hence no slogans would be raised during the walk. The organizers would ensure that traffic movement on the highway was not hampered, he added. Details are awaited.
