Mangaluru, Aug 28: Veteran journalist and thinker Dinesh Amin Mattu has called upon the people of Dakshina Kannada to kick Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) out of the district to put an end to communal violence and see development.

Mattu, who is now media adviser to Karnataka Chief Minister, was speaking at the 11th Mangaluru city conference of the Democratic Youth Federation of India on Sunday.

He accused the RSS of holding campaigns to polarise voters on caste and religious lines that will help the BJP.

Citing reports of RSS leader B L Santosh leading the proposed “Mangaluru Chalo”, from September 5 to Spetmber 7, by the BJP Yuva Morcha, Mattu said that the people of the region should demand RSS hatao. “One can see development in the coastal district only if RSS moves out,” he said.

Recalling his younger days that he spent in Dakshina Kannada, Mattu said that a lot has changed in the last three decades and the district has turned into a communally sensitive region.

“The educational and religious institutions, which made this land known for communal harmony, are now the cause for making this a communally sensitive region.” Mattu said that it was important to have a prolonged ideological fight against efforts to destroy religious and cultural diversity.

Mattu said that Hindu religion has not been revived by the Hindutva leaders like Pejawar seer, Mohan Bhagawat or Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat. The real Hindu ideology has remained intact owing to the efforts of revolutionaries like Swami Vivekananda and Narayana Guru.

He asked why the self-acclaimed Hindu leaders do not speak on untouchability and superstitions, which are being used to exploit poor in the name of religion and God.

Mattu opined that the Congress party should return to history to reestablish the ideology of secularism. “In the pre-independence era, the national leaders had a unanimous ideology of patriotism till the concept of party-based leadership thrived. But, now, the party leaders get into publicity and maintain higher level contacts to gain grassroot-level command. Those who did not care about caste have now been maintaining that caste is a necessary identity. The Congress has to return to the era of Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi who stood up for secularism in the nation,” he said.

Mattu also asked why the critics of the Indira Canteen have not been raising a hue and cry on tax exemption of Rs 42 lakh crore for industrialists and loans to the tune of Rs 10 lakh crore which has been raided-off. In comparison to these, the Rs 2.5 lakh crore, which is inclusive of all kinds of subsidies for poor is meagre, he pointed out. He condemned the privatisation of public enterprises like BSNL.

When the black and white photos of the ‘London to Calcutta (Kolkata) bus service’ went viral on social media recently, the response of some of the netizens was “stop spreading fake news!” But, it isn’t a fake news. The late 1950s indeed offered people a lavish bus trip from London to Kolkata.

While one of the viral images shows passengers at the Victoria Coach Station, London, boarding 'Albert', the other image show the same bus travelling through a valley. In another image the bus is stationed at a tourist spot. All these photos were captured during the bus’ maiden international journey in 1957.

An image of the bus ticket is also making rounds on social media, that shows the route of the bus — London, Belgium, West Germany, Austria,Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, West Pakistan, India. The route in India followed Delhi, Agra, Allahabad, Banaras and finally Calcutta.

The ticket shows that a one side travel cost 145 pounds (13,644 Rupees at the present day) back then, and it was inclusive of all the luxury provided during the run.

The luxurious bus provided the facilities of reading, individual sleeping bunks, radio/taped music for parties and pleasure and fan heaters, among other things. The brochure reads, "Your complete home while you travel."

Some of the tour highlights included Banaras on the Ganges, The Taj Mahal, The Raj Path, The Rhine Valley and The Peacock Throne. Passengers reportedly got free shopping days in New Delhi, Tehran, Salzburg, Kabul, Istanbul and Vienna.

Bengaluru, July 29: The Central Crime Branch arrested four international drug peddlers belonging to Kerala and recovered drugs worth Rs 1.25 crore from them, said Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday.

"We have started a war on drugs. Our agenda is to curb the drug mafia not only in Bengaluru, but in entire Karnataka. Many people are involved in the drug mafia. They are targeting students, other states, and international students who can spend and afford to become victims," said Bommai.

The recovered items include 2,000 kg LSD strips, 110 grams MDMA Cristol, 10 ecstasy tablets, 5 kg Ganja, five cell phones, weighing machine and pouches.

"When we raided a house in Soladevanahally police station area, we arrested Shahad Mohammed, Azmal, Ajin KG Verghese and Nitin Mohan. All are from Kerala and we will arrest their contacts as well. They are involved in the dark web mafia," Bommai said.

He said the peddlers were using post offices and couriers for their business.

"I'll speak to the central government, the home ministry and postal department, and other issues related to this mafia. Canada, Netherlands, and other nations are also involved in this mafia," said the state home minister.

"People from influential backgrounds are also involved in this mafia, but our objective is zero tolerance. We are using our intelligence. Drugs are coming from other states like AP, Goa, and other states," he said.
Bommai said he was personally addressing this case and appealed for support from parents, schools and colleges.

"I'm addressing this issue personally because it's important to curb the drug mafia. I need support from schools and college managements and parents. I'll also call college and hostel managements before colleges start. We will make managements responsible," he said.
