Want solution for Mahadayi row? Elect BJP to power: Amit Shah to Kannadigas

Kalaburagi, Feb 26: Bharatiya Janata Party supremo has indirectly warned the Kannadigas that Centre would not interfere to resolve Mahadayi river water sharing dispute between Karnataka and Goa until they elect BJP to power in the state.

Speaking to media persons, Amit Shah said that the BJP will settle the row, if it comes to power in Karnataka. "The issue would have been laid to rest if Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had cooperated with us earlier. Even now, there are people who are creating problems. If the people of the state place their faith in us and bring us to power, a solution for Mahadayi will happen," Shah appealed.

He said that the state government has to buy the toor dal produced by farmers in the state at a support price. Waiving farmer loans by roping in nationalised banks is left to the new government that comes to power in the state.

"The centre has bought 25.67 lakh quintals of toor dal under the support price scheme. State government has to buy 1.74 lakh quintals only. Even if the state government had bought half of our purchase, it would have alleviated farmers' problems to a great extent. We have bought farmers' produce in all BJP ruled states like Uttar Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat. Why can't Karnataka government do it?" he queried.

"The BJP central parliamentary party will name candidates. You leave giving K S Eswarappa a ticket for the polls-or not; to me. Taking care of the party leaders' best interests is my job. Why are you worried about it? " he shot back to a question.

His utterances are against the spirit of Federalism and Democratic principles. Being an MP & President of ruling party his words should match with his position. But alas! it sounds like whistle blowing of a local gang leader.

Mandya, Feb 9: A youth from Arechakanahalli village of Maddur taluk on Saturday allegedly committed suicide in Bengaluru after his lover got engaged to another man.

The body of the deceased, Darshan, was found hanging from the celising of his room in Bengaluru. According to Darshan's relatives, he was in love with a girl for the past few years.

Darshan had wanted to marry her, much to the chagrin of her parents, it is said.

The girl's parents had allegedly warned him of dire consequences if he did not stay clear from their daughter. In the meanwhile, she got engaged to another man.

Feeling left out, Darshan allegedly ended his life. In the suicide note, Darshan has held his lover and some of her relatives responsible for his death. He has also claimed that his family was facing death threat from her family.

There are rumours that Darshan might have been killed after he refused to stop seeing the girl. Though both the families are from the same community, their financial status, sources said, is different.

According to the relative of Darshan, the girl is a close relative to a former minister from Mandya district.

"There are reasons to suspect that Darshan might have been murdered, and a suicide note may have been planted at the crime spot.

A proper investigation should be conducted to unearth the truth," he said.

Bengaluru, Jan 23: City civic body Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) levied a penalty of Rs 50,000 on the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) for using single-use plastic cups during the recent India-Australia one-day international match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

"Despite many awareness meetings, BBMP has found that single-use plastic cups were used during yesterday's cricket match and has fined KSCA Rs 50,000 as penalty," tweeted the civic body commissioner BH Anil Kumar.

The state cricket association treasurer Vinaya Mruthyunjaya said the civic body gave a general notice without detailed information on plastic use.

"We have been environmentally friendly for the last many years and at all gates, security has made sure no plastic or flex was allowed inside the stadium," Mruthyunjaya told media.

Mruthyunjaya said KSCA sought information from the civic body as to where the single-use plastic cups were found in the stadium during the India-Australia match.

On January 16, KSCA president Roger Binny inaugurated a plastic bottle shredder at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, in addition to other green initiatives at the cricket ground such as solar panels, sub-air system, biogas unit, rainwater harvesting and others.

Similarly, in December 2019, BBMP cracked down on popular fast food eatery – Adyar Anand Bhavan in HSR Layout and fined the establishment Rs 1 lakh for plastic use.

In October, the BBMP fined eateries including McDonald's in central Bengaluru for using plastic.
