Water starts receding, situation will be back to normal soon: Indian Navy on Karnataka floods

Belagavi, Aug 11: The water in flood-hit districts of Belagavi and Uttar Kannada has started receding and the situation will soon be back to normal, said Rear Admiral Mahesh Singh, Flag Officer Commanding Karnataka Naval Area, on Sunday.

"As of yesterday evening, the water has started receding. It is appreciated that the situation will be back to normal," Rear Admiral Singh told ANI. 

Continuing the rescue operation, the Indian Navy has deployed eight relief teams in the districts. The teams have so far managed to rescue nearly 2,200 people.

"Navy has deployed eight relief teams and two helicopters in Belagavi and Uttar Kannada districts," Singh added.

So far, around 3.75 lakh hectare crop area, 14,000 houses and 478 km of power lines have been damaged due to floods in the state.

Yesterday, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa conducted an aerial survey and announced Rs 5 lakh compensation to next of kin of the people, who lost their lives in the floods that have crippled the state.

The Chief Minister informed that over two lakh people have been evacuated from flood-affected areas and 1.61 lakh people are in 664 relief camps across the state.

Yediyurappa also said that Meanwhile, all schools, and colleges -- government and private -- in affected flood-hit districts will remain closed till August 15.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had also visited the flood-affected areas in Belgaum.

Mangaluru, May 13: Kinz Foundation started distributing around 1500 food packets daily for migrant workers migrating in different parts of Dakshina Kannada district amidst coastal coronavirus lockdown.

"We are distributing daily 1,500 food packets both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. The number will be increased to 5,000," said businessman Althaf Hussain who arranged food packets on May 13.

"These are trying times. The poor migrants who are being denied of their bread due to the lockdown deserve help and we are trying to bring them food which is most basic needs.” he added.

Bengaluru, Mar 20: Two COVID-19 positive patients in Karnataka have fully recovered and will be discharged today.

Karnataka Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar said: "Two COVID-19 positive patients have completely recovered and will be discharged tomorrow. They will be kept under home quarantine for 14 days as a precautionary measure."

The number of COVID-19 positive patients in Karnataka stands at 14 as of today.

"The total number of positive cases of COVID19 in India stands at 173, including 25 foreigners. Four deaths (1 each) have occurred in Delhi, Karnataka, Punjab and Maharashtra," said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in a statement.

According to official data provided by the Ministry of Health, as many as 15 people infected with the virus have been discharged after receiving treatment.

Bengaluru, Jul 3: Opposition leader in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday opined that there is no other option left but to resort to 'Jail Bharo' agitation to expose the ruling BJP government's indulge in 'Corona Corruption' which runs into more than Rs 2000 crore.

Siddaramaiah said that according to a submission to the Karnataka High Court the government has submitted that it has incurred Rs 3,392 crore expenditure for Corona in the State so far. While the market price for equipment purchased will not exceed Rs 1163 crore and it clearly shows that the corruption is to the tune of Rs 2,000 crore.

Siddaramaiah speaking to a private TV channel here on Friday said the chief minister B S Yediyurappa-led State government should come out with a White Paper on the money spent for purchases made facilities provided to patients. 

According to submission to the Court, the Government has purchased 1000 Ventilators by paying Rs 120 crore, while the market price is Rs 40 crores at Rs 4 lakh for each Ventilator. Why is Rs 120 crore more paid, does it not lead to doubt the government's claim. For purchase of kits, mask, gloves etc. it amounted to Rs 1,500 crores but paid by the government was Rs 9,000 crore."
