Alappuzha, Apr 17: While coming down heavily on the RSS and the BJP, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday held the Left Front in high regard.

Addressing an election rally of the United Democratic Front (UDF) Alappuzha candidate Shanimol Usman at Municipal Stadium here, Mr. Gandhi said he could differentiate between the RSS and the Left Front.

‘Better than RSS’

“We are fighting against the Left in Kerala. But the Left has never done what RSS is doing in the country. The Left has never tried to control the institutions of the country. They never questioned the Constitution of the country. They never tried to destroy the organisations of the country,” Mr. Gandhi said.

Farmers’ budget

Mr. Gandhi said that if the Congress was voted to power, it would introduce a dedicated farmers budget.

“The paddy farmers are in distress in Kerala following floods. The farmers can plan their future in tune with the budget. Once we come to power, no farmer in India will be put in jail for not repaying their bank loan,” he said.

The Congress president said that Prime Minister Narendra had become the ‘chowkidar’ of 15 corrupt people in the country.

“In 2014, Modi had announced that two crore jobs would be generated every year and Rs. 15 lakh would be given to every bank account holder. Further, when he became the Prime Minister, he insisted on the people to call him chowkidar. Instead of providing Rs. 15 lakh to every citizen, Modi has given Rs. 3.5 lakh crore to 15 corrupt people,” he said.

Voice of the people

Mr. Gandhi said that the country should be represented by the voice of its people.

“We disagree with BJP and the RSS, but we do not want to eliminate them. Love always triumphs over hate,” he said.

On his candidature from Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency, Mr. Gandhi said that it was a pride moment for him.

New Delhi, Jun 3: Seasoned diplomat and former spokesperson of the External Affairs Ministry Raveesh Kumar has been appointed as India's next Ambassador to Finland, the government announced on Wednesday.

Raveesh Kumar, a 1995-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, served as the spokesperson of the MEA from July 2017 to April 2020 during which he deftly articulated India's position on a number of sensitive issues including last year's Balakot strike, reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir and the controversy surrounding the National Register of Citizens.

"He is expected to take up the assignment shortly," the MEA said.

Before becoming the MEA spokesperson, Kumar was serving as Consul General of India in Frankfurt.

Kumar started his career at the Indian Mission in Jakarta and it was followed by his postings in Thimpu and London.
