Bengaluru, May 10: Asaduddin Owaisi, the president of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM), has courted a controversy by wearing a saffron turban when he addressed a Janata Dal (Secular) rally in poll-bound Karnataka.

Owaisi, who is facing allegations of helping BJP candidates in several states by fielding his party’s candidates to divide Muslim votes, had decided to field around 50 MIM candidates in May 12 polls for Karnataka Legislative Assembly. However, following a meeting with JD(S) leaders, he changed his decision and announced complete support to the party of H D Kumaraswamy who had once formed coalition government with BJP in Karnataka.

Earlier this week, Owaisi, who is a member of parliament from Hyderabad, hit the campaign trail in Karnataka and attacked chief minister Siddaramaiah-led Congress government in Karnataka while urging the people to support Kumaraswamy, who recently in a public rally in Chikkamagaluru had expressed his readiness to join hands with any party to form the government.

Known for being outspoken against both Congress and BJP, the habitually skullcap-wearing Owaisi turned many heads when he emerged in an artfully tied saffron turban at a public gathering in Belagavi.

The photos and videos of Owaisi with saffron turban are now going viral on social media within Muslims of the state who consider Siddarmaiah a non-communal politician accusing the MIM chief of trying to help BJP again by joining hands with JD(S).

In his speech, Owaisi said that people of Karnataka fed up with the Siddarmaiah government and formation of a non-Congress and non-BJP government was need of the hour. “Hence, I am here to campaign for the JD(S),” he said adding that the regional parties should take centre-stage and end the era of national parties.

Mangaluru, Mar 31: With the Dakshina Kannada district administration relaxing the lockdown from 6 am to 3 pm to purchase essential commodities, panic-stricken citizens rushed to the shops early in the morning itself.

The citizens had formed a serpentine line in front of shops and supermarkets in different parts of Mangaluru and on the outskirts of the city to purchase their requirements.

As a precautionary measure, many were seen wearing masks.

“In spite of waiting in a long queue to purchase, we are not able to get the required essential commodities. Why can’t the district administration ensure enough stock of commodities in the shops and supermarkets,’’ asked a customer who had stood in a queue outside a supermarket at Chilimbi.
People were seen crowding outside markets at Kankanady, Mallikatte, Urwa and Central Market, violating the purpose of social distancing.

Consequently, vegetable prices have increased in the markets and shops. This is despite abundant stocks being available in these markets.

Trucks had unloaded the vegetables at Central Market on Sunday, according to sources. The prices of onions are skyrocketing yet again and is sold from Rs 50 to Rs 55 while a kg of carrot costs Rs 100.

"Why can’t the authorities check the rise in the price of vegetables and ensure that the poor are not inconvenienced," asks Lakshmi, a housewife.

New Delhi, May 29: Opining that there is no harm in importing ideas from abroad Swadeshi Jagran Manch, an affiliate of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, has suggested that India should take a cue from Pakistan and turn the “locust threat” into “chicken feed.

In an interview, Ashwani Mahajan, national co-convener of Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) said: “I saw an article which shows that Pakistan has turned the locust threat into an opportunity by converting it into chicken feed”

“If there is a good idea originating from anywhere, we should be open to exploring such ideas. We should adopt good ideas. There is no harm in that,” he added.

He also shared the article on Twitter and wrote: “Pakistan turns locust threat into chicken feed. Need to understand the idea and replicate it in India.”

The article stated “an innovative pilot project in Pakistan’s Okara district offers a sustainable solution in which farmers earn money by trapping locusts that are turned into high-protein chicken feed by animal feed mills”.

“It was the brainchild of Muhammad Khurshid, a civil servant in the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, and Johar Ali, a bio-technologist from the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council,” according to the article.

Both Pakistan and India have been hit by locust attacks. These are desert locusts, which is one of the 12 species of short-horned grasshoppers. Swarms can comprise billions and travel up to 130 km in a day.

India has been battling the locust attacks with moderate success since December. However, the onset of monsoon could bring more trouble.
