WhatsApp sets up system to store payments-related data locally

New Delhi, Oct 9: Messaging platform WhatsApp Tuesday said it has set up a system in India that stores payments-related data locally in the country to comply with RBI regulations.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), in a circular dated April 6, had said all system providers shall ensure that the entire data relating to payment systems operated by them are stored in a system only in India.

It had given time till October 15 to comply with the mandate.

"In India, almost one million people are testing WhatsApp payments to send money to each other in a simple and secure way. In response to India's payments data circular, we've built a system that stores payments-related data locally in India," a WhatsApp spokesperson said.

The spokesperson added that the company hopes to expand the feature across India soon, so that it can "contribute to the country's financial inclusion goals".

RBI, in its April order, had said it is important to have "unfettered supervisory access to data stored with these system providers as also with their service providers/intermediaries/third party vendors and other entities in the payment ecosystem" to ensure better monitoring of payment service operators.

RBI further said data should include the full end-to-end transaction details, information collected/carried/ processed as part of the message/payment instruction.

Bengaluru, Feb 13: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Thursday said the government had initiated measures to implement the Sarojini Mahishi report as the 12-hour Karnataka bandh call by several pro-Kannada organisations under the banner of Karnataka Sanghatanegala Okkoota began on Thursday.

“Government always stood for Kannada and Kannadigas and initiated measures to implement the Sarojini Mahishi report,” Yediyurappa said. Meanwhile, in Bengaluru, Ola, Uber and auto services were affected even though buses were plying as usual. Security has also been beefed up in Bengaluru after stones were pelted at a Tirupati-Mangaluru bus in Farangipet, though no one was injured.

Bangalore University has postponed all postgraduate (PG) exams scheduled for today. A pro-Kannada activist, Praveen Shetty, was kept under house arrest and police have detained a few people, including those involved in Cauvery protests and other bandh cases.

The organisations are demanding the implementation of a report by former union minister Sarojini Mahishi that recommends a certain percentage of jobs to Kannadigas in public sector undertakings, private companies, and multinational companies. The report was submitted in 1984 but is yet to be implemented.

Chikkamagaluru, May 4: KSRTC resumed its service from Chikkamagaluru district headquarters to taluk centres amidst the lockdown to contain COVID-19 on Monday. Chikkamagaluru is in the green zone.

Hundreds of passengers travelled to Sringeri, Mudigere, Koppa and Kadur taluks since morning from the Chikkamagaluru city.

According to KSRTC Divisional Controller, passengers who wish to travel to taluk centres have to register half an hour prior to the journey. 

Sanitisers were placed in the bus stand in Chikkamagaluru to sanitise hands before boarding the buses.

Mangaluru, Aug 7: Following the incessant rain for last few days and subsequent landslides reported at various places along Charmadi Ghat, the movement of vehicles been banned for two days. 

Charmadi Ghat road connects Dakshina Kannada and Chikkamagaluru districts on National Highway-73. The fresh landslides caused cracks on the road and uprooted many trees. 
Officials have closed Charmadi as well as Kottigehara check posts as a precautionary measure.

Belthangady tahsildar Mahesh J confirmed that multiple landslides have hit Charmadi Ghat road.

"The road has been closed for vehicular movement as the officials are at the spot to clear landslide debris. As a precautionary measure, vehicular movement has been banned as there are chances of further landslides," he said.

Hundreds of commuters who were stuck on various stretches of the ghat following a landslide between Maleyamaruta and Alekan falls in Chikkamagaluru district have been rescued.
