WhatsApp sets up system to store payments-related data locally

New Delhi, Oct 9: Messaging platform WhatsApp Tuesday said it has set up a system in India that stores payments-related data locally in the country to comply with RBI regulations.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), in a circular dated April 6, had said all system providers shall ensure that the entire data relating to payment systems operated by them are stored in a system only in India.

It had given time till October 15 to comply with the mandate.

"In India, almost one million people are testing WhatsApp payments to send money to each other in a simple and secure way. In response to India's payments data circular, we've built a system that stores payments-related data locally in India," a WhatsApp spokesperson said.

The spokesperson added that the company hopes to expand the feature across India soon, so that it can "contribute to the country's financial inclusion goals".

RBI, in its April order, had said it is important to have "unfettered supervisory access to data stored with these system providers as also with their service providers/intermediaries/third party vendors and other entities in the payment ecosystem" to ensure better monitoring of payment service operators.

RBI further said data should include the full end-to-end transaction details, information collected/carried/ processed as part of the message/payment instruction.

Bengaluru, Mar 16: Hundreds of people gathered to felicitate the newly appointed Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president DK Shivakumar in Bengaluru on Monday.

"Everyone is a team, I'm not alone. We all are together and we will work together," Kumar had said after his appointment.

Shivakumar was appointed as the chief of Karnataka Congress last week on Wednesday.

Party leaders Eshwar Khandre, Satish Jarkiholi and Saleem Ahmed were appointed working presidents of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee.

Bengaluru, May 24: Karnataka Tourism Minister CT Ravi said that coronavirus lockdown has severely marred the tourism industry in the state and the government will revive it in a phased manner.

"It would be beneficial if hotels are opened keeping in mind few restrictions. At present, the tourism industry has fallen flat making it very difficult to promote tourism in the state," Ravi said.

"Our department has planned to promote tourism in a phased manner. In the first phase, we would focus on native tourism; then in the second phase, we will promote inter-district travel; in the third phase, we will put weight behind inter-state tourism and in the fourth phase, we would be promoting international travel and tourism," he added.

Karnataka's COVID-19 count surges to 1,958 with 216 new cases of the virus reported in the last 24 hours, said the Health Department in a bulletin on Saturday.

Out of the total number of cases, 1,307 patients are active cases and 608 patients have been discharged. The total number of fatalities due to COVID-19 in the state has risen to 42.

Kasaragod, Jul 27: Seven persons belonging to two relative-families who attended a funeral recently had been tested positive for Coronavirus on Monday.

Sources said the two families had been to Thavinjal near here for the funeral of a man who died at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital on July 19.

Later, the samples of these seven persons were sent for testing after they developed symptoms of COVID-19, the result of which came out on Monday.
