WhatsApp sets up system to store payments-related data locally

New Delhi, Oct 9: Messaging platform WhatsApp Tuesday said it has set up a system in India that stores payments-related data locally in the country to comply with RBI regulations.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), in a circular dated April 6, had said all system providers shall ensure that the entire data relating to payment systems operated by them are stored in a system only in India.

It had given time till October 15 to comply with the mandate.

"In India, almost one million people are testing WhatsApp payments to send money to each other in a simple and secure way. In response to India's payments data circular, we've built a system that stores payments-related data locally in India," a WhatsApp spokesperson said.

The spokesperson added that the company hopes to expand the feature across India soon, so that it can "contribute to the country's financial inclusion goals".

RBI, in its April order, had said it is important to have "unfettered supervisory access to data stored with these system providers as also with their service providers/intermediaries/third party vendors and other entities in the payment ecosystem" to ensure better monitoring of payment service operators.

RBI further said data should include the full end-to-end transaction details, information collected/carried/ processed as part of the message/payment instruction.

Mangaluru, June 5: A local businessman was hacked to death while two of his relatives suffered critical injuries in a broad daylight attack by a group of miscreants at Mulki on the outskirts of the city today.

The victim has been identified as Abdul Lateef (38). He was proprieter of Align Gold, Moodbidri. His wife is an advocate in Moodbidri. 

Abdul Lateef's father-in-law Muneer and latter's son Hayat suffered stab injuries. They are undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mangaluru. 

The attack took place near the Vijaya Bank in Mulki. 

According to sources, a gang of miscreants stabbed all three. While Abudl Lateef succumbed to his injuries, the other two are responding to the treatment. 

Police have registered a case. Investigations are on.

Bengaluru, Jul 17: Karnataka Minister for Health and Family Welfare B Sriramulu on Thursday clarified that his remarks have been misinterpreted, wherein he apparently said that ''only God can save people from Covid''.

The Bharatiya Janata Party leader slammed KPCC President D K Shivakumar for spreading false information and said that my words were not meant to cause panic among the masses.

''Respected Shivakumar, this is a clarification regarding my words that have been misinterpreted and misunderstood.

While responding to claims of the opposition that the government’s negligence, irresponsibility and the lack of coordination among ministers are responsible for the rise in cases in the state, I stated that ‘these accusations are far from the truth. People need to be aware and cautious to avoid the spread of the virus. This plays a vital role in controlling the pandemic. If we fail at this crucial step the situation can get complicated. And if things go worse, then only God can save us'', Mr Sriramulu said in a series of posts on Twitter

Mangaluru, Jan 3: A young entrepreneur reportedly jumped off the Netravati bridge near Thokkottu on the outskirts of the city today morning.

The youth who allegedly committed suicide has been Navesh Kottari, 30, a resident of Ullalbail. He was the proprietor of N J Shamiyana.

The incident took place at around 6:30 a.m. Police and fire brigade rushed to the spot after sometime and launched search operation for the body in the river Netravati.

The body was retrieved in the afternoon.
