WhatsApp sets up system to store payments-related data locally

New Delhi, Oct 9: Messaging platform WhatsApp Tuesday said it has set up a system in India that stores payments-related data locally in the country to comply with RBI regulations.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), in a circular dated April 6, had said all system providers shall ensure that the entire data relating to payment systems operated by them are stored in a system only in India.

It had given time till October 15 to comply with the mandate.

"In India, almost one million people are testing WhatsApp payments to send money to each other in a simple and secure way. In response to India's payments data circular, we've built a system that stores payments-related data locally in India," a WhatsApp spokesperson said.

The spokesperson added that the company hopes to expand the feature across India soon, so that it can "contribute to the country's financial inclusion goals".

RBI, in its April order, had said it is important to have "unfettered supervisory access to data stored with these system providers as also with their service providers/intermediaries/third party vendors and other entities in the payment ecosystem" to ensure better monitoring of payment service operators.

RBI further said data should include the full end-to-end transaction details, information collected/carried/ processed as part of the message/payment instruction.

Mangaluru/Udupi, Aug 2: The twin coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi witnessed sporadic movement of vehicles and relatively less commercial activities today in spite of the withdrawal of ‘Sunday lockdown’ by the state government. 

After the central government announced guidelines under Unlock 3.0, the Karnataka government has removed the complete lockdown concept on Sundays and done away with the night curfews too. So from today (August 2), there will be no lockdown on Sundays.

KSRTC operated its buses as usually. However, compared to other days, today the number of private and city buses on the roads in Dakshina Kannada was limited. 

In Udupi, city buses remained off the roads as the number of passengers was less. However, KSRTC and NARM buses were seen transporting passengers.

In containment zones ban on movement of people will continue till August 31 in Udupi. The Santhekatte market used to function on Saturdays, as there was Sunday lockdown on earlier Sundays. Now the market will be open on Sundays only.

Mangaluru, Mar 28: After a youth from Dakshina Kannada who tested positive for the deadly Covid-19 revealed that he had travelled by a bus, authorities have requested all his fellow passengers to visit their nearest district hospital. 

The 21-year-old man hailing from Belthangady taluk had flown from Dubai to Bengaluru on March 21 and on the same day travelled to Mangaluru by the KSRTC bus bearing registration number KA 19, F3329. 

As he was suffering from fever and cough he was admitted to Puttur government hospital on March 24. He was tested positive for the novel coronavirus on March 27.   

It is not yet know how many passengers were there on board the above mentioned bus which had departed Bengaluru at 4:30 p.m. on March 21. It is believed that most of the passengers who travelled by this bus are residents of Dakshina Kannada. 

Hence, the KSRTC authorities today requested all the passengers who travelled by this bus to visit their nearest district hospital for necessary checkup. The passengers also were urged to quarantine themselves for next couple of weeks.

Tumakuru, Jul 7: Coronavirus is spreading at the community level in Karnataka, said minister, JC Madhuswamy on Monday.

"Medical condition of eight infected with coronavirus admitted in Tumkur COVID Hospital is critical. There is no guarantee of their lives as per the information. We somewhere feel we are worried that coronavirus is spreading at the community level," Madhuswamy, Tumakuru district-in-charge minister, told reporters here.

"We have reached a point where it is difficult for the district authorities to restrain it, even though we are trying to restrain it. Somewhere the situation is going out of hand," he said.

The minister confirmed that the cumulative toll in the district due to COVID-19 rises to 9.

Earlier, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, Deputy CM Ashwath Narayan, Medical Education Minister Dr Sudhakar have denied of community transmission of coronavirus in Karnataka.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, there are 23,474 coronavirus cases in Karnataka including 13,255 and 372 deaths.
