Where was your respect when you broke away, Sena asks Modi

Mumbai, Oct 7: The Shiv Sena on Monday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi where his respect for Balasaheb Thackeray was when the BJP broke its alliance with the Sena over seat-sharing for the Maharashtra Assembly elections.

Sena asks Modi During a rally in Maharashtra on Sunday, Mr. Modi said that he would not utter a single word against the Shiv Sena “due to respect for [its founder] Balasaheb Thackeray,” who passed away in 2012. “This is the first Assembly election after the demise of Balasaheb Thackeray, and I will not say anything against the Shiv Sena this time,” he had said.

The Sena mouthpiece Saamna, in its editorial, said: “It is good that he respects the Shiv Sena supremo. Even we respect Mr. Modi. But where did this respect go when it broke the 25-year-old alliance? A more fitting tribute to Balasaheb Thackeray would have been the maintenance of the saffron alliance.”

The editorial claimed that the BJP was trying to loot Maharashtra. “What was the purpose of Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel’s visit to Mumbai recently? She told industrialists in Maharashtra to move base to Gujarat. This is trying to plunder Maharashtra,” it said. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray too had raised the same issue in his rally on Sunday.

The editorial also slammed the BJP for invoking Chhatrapati Shivaji, a State icon. Calling it “hypocrisy,” Saamna said those who did not celebrate Shiv Jayanti in their lifetime, now claimed the blessings of Shivaji Maharaj.

“The BJP might be armed with the power of money and intellect, and the art of backstabbing people, but Shivaji maharaj’s blessings are not so cheap. From where will you bring the valour?” the editorial asked.

India sees spike of 18,522 COVID-19 cases, tally reaches 5,66,840

New Delhi, Jun 30: With a spike of 18,522 COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, India's coronavirus count now stand at 5,66,840, said the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry on Tuesday.

According to the Ministry, 418 deaths due to COVID-19 were reported in the last 24 hours. The number of deaths in the country now stands at 16,893.

There are 2,15,125 active coronavirus cases in the country while the number of cured/discharged patients stands at 3,34,821 and one patient migrated.

As per the Ministry, Maharashtra is the worst-hit state with regard to the COVID-19 cases and has reported 1,69,883 cases, including 73, 313 active cases 88,960 cured/discharged patients and 7,610 fatalities.

Tamil Nadu has a total of 86,224 cases including 1,141 deaths. Delhi's COVID-19 count stands at 85,161 cases and 2,680 fatalities.

The total number of samples tested up to 29 June is 86,08,654 of which 2,10,292 samples were tested yesterday, informed the Indian Council of Medical Research.

Several dead, dozens trapped after massive landslide in Kerala's Munnar

Idukki, Aug 7: Several people lost their lives and dozens of tea estate workers are feared trapped under soil in Kerala’s Munnar after torrential rains triggered a massive landslide on today.

As many as five bodies have been recovered and rescue workers are fighting inclement weather to remove the debris.

According to rescue workers, four lanes of quarters and a church are buried under mud and around 80 people are feared trapped.

Seven people have been rescued so far and shifted to the hospital.

Sources said a portion of Pettimudi came crashing down on the workers colony with a deafening roar in the wee hours of Friday.

As people were sleeping in the quarters, there was little time to escape.

Further, with the Periyavara bridge being washed away, it became all the more difficult for rescue workers to reach the spot.

The construction of a new temporary Periyavara bridge however, is underway.

The bridge was previously destructed during the deluge of August 2018. Later during the north west monsoons and the south west monsoon of 2019, it suffered damage again.

The present bridge, which got damaged on Thursday after Kannimala river levels rose, was constructed under the leadership of Coir fed.

Although a new concrete bridge has been constructed near the temporary bridge in Periyavara, vehicle movement has not been possible because the authorities are yet to build its approach via road.

The new bridge is to be constructed at a cost of Rs 4.75 crore from Devikulam MLA S Rajendran's fund.

The entire area has been cut off from outside world and communication networks have also crashed.

Teams of Fire and Rescue personnel, NDRF, revenue officials, estate workers and police are struggling to conduct rescue operations.

Meanwhile, District collector H Dhineshan said a team of rescue personnel was sent to Pettymudy after he was briefed about the mishap and search operations to locate and rescue people are underway.

Facilities have been arranged at the hospitals nearby to provide necessary treatment facilities to the people being rescued.

Defectors should be banned from holding public office for 5 years, fighting next poll: Kapil Sibal

New Delhi, Jul 19: Amid the political firestorm in Rajasthan following Sachin Pilot's rebellion, senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal on Sunday called for amending the anti-defection law to ban all defectors from holding public office for five years and fighting the next election.

Sibal also said that the "antibodies" against the "virus of corrupt means" to topple elected governments lie in amending the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution (anti-defection law).

His attack comes in the wake of Pilot's open rebellion against the Ashok Gehlot government, which has been on shaky ground since, with at least 18 legislators backing the rebel leader.

Pilot was sacked as deputy chief minister and the state Congress chief earlier this week.

The Congress has accused the BJP of making efforts to topple the Gehlot government by indulging in horse-trading.

"Need for Vaccine: Virus of 'corrupt means' to topple elected governments has spread through a 'Wuhan like facility' in Delhi," Sibal tweeted, in an apparent swipe at the BJP.

"Its 'antibodies' lie in amending the Tenth Schedule. Ban all defectors from: Holding public office for five years, fighting the next election," he said.

Taking a swipe at Pilot over his claim that he is not joining the BJP, Sibal on Thursday had asked what happens to his "ghar wapsi" and whether Rajasthan's dissident legislators are vacationing in Haryana under the "watchful eye" of the saffron party.

In the house of 200, the Congress has 107 MLAs, including the 19 dissidents who have been issued notices of disqualification by the speaker and they have challenged them in the high court.

The Congress has maintained the claim that the Gehlot government has the support of 109 MLAs, including the two BTP MLAs.
