'Who is Maria Sharapova?' India trolls tennis star for not knowing Sachin

July 4, 2014

New Delhi, Jul 3: The top Twitter trend in India, as this article is being typed, reads 'Who is Maria Sharapova?' Just as you start wondering if Twitter users in India had suddenly suffered such a debilitating attack of amnesia that has made them clueless about the woman who won the French Open a little over a month ago, you come across this. A tweet declaring that Maria Sharapova is Russia's Alia Bhatt.

Maria SharapovaAs you wonder what Sharapova did to have deserved a comparison with Bhatt, you stumble upon scores of tweets accusing her of being a bimbo. And that's when you realise that the top trend on Twitter in India is one meant to troll Sharapova. And what's her great sin? She doesn't know who Sachin Tendulkar is.

Ah, no she didn't take to social media to ask 'Sachin, Who?' as NDTVSports puts it in a headline. She was informed in a post match press meet that Sachin Tendulkar was in attendance at the match and was asked if she knew who he was. She replied, '"I don't."

Grilled further, she said that she has met David Beckham, who was also in attendance, 'a few times'. She added that she admired Beckham for his skill as a sportsman and for being a great person.

While she might not have meant the comment as condescension and was displaying her lack of knowledge about the poster-boy of a sport that she might not follow, Sachin fans were not too pleased. And to show her how much she was in the wrong, they reportedly spammed her Facebook page with abuses and insults.

The Newsminute reports about the kind of abuses Sharapova received on her Facebook page: "While some have simply repeated Sachin's name many times, others have called him their God. Some others reminded Sharapova of her ignorance and about Sachin's cricketing records. One picture posted by Sharapova recently has 16,000 comments- a majority are by Sachin fans questioning Sharapova's impudence. The self proclaimed fans have taken the pain to go to almost every picture on Sharapova's album, even pictures she posted many months ago and spammed with comments about Sachin. A quick glance and surprisingly most of the abuses are in Malayalam.. One person reminds her that it is not enough if she has white skin."

Sachin fans also took to Twitter to virulently attack Sharapova for not knowing who Sachin Tendulkar is. Following are some tweets expressing outrage at her apparent 'ignorance'.

Mumbai, Jun 6: Reminiscing about his 'special knock' of 208 runs from 153 balls, Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma revealed why his wife Ritika had got emotional after he smashed his third double century in ODIs.

Rohit narrated the incident during his appearance in Episode 2 of the 'Open nets with Mayank'.

The batsman, who was accompanied by Shikhar Dhawan and Mayank on the show, said his wife thought that he had twisted his hand while diving for the 196th run during the innings.

"As you can see my wife got emotional there, this day was special as it was my anniversary. Probably the best gift I could give it to her while I am on the field, it was quite emotional though," said Rohit during the candid chat.

"When I came from the ground, I just asked her why did you (Ritika) cry? So she told me that she thought I (Rohit) twisted my hand when I dived for my 196th run and that was a little worrying factor for her, she got little emotional of because of that I guess," Rohit added.

In the match, the 32-year-old scored 208 runs with 13 fours and 12 sixes against Sri Lanka at Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali.

This enabled India to post a score of 392/4 in the allotted fifty overs.

India then went on to win the match by 141 runs.

"To be honest I was going pretty slow, I never thought I will get to a double hundred but once you cross 125, I feel it gets easier for you because bowlers are under pressure. Unless you make a mistake I don't think you can get out," said Rohit.

Rohit has scored two double hundreds against Sri Lanka and one against Australia in ODIs. The right-handed batsman is the only cricketer to make three double hundreds in ODI history.

Rohit, Shikhar, and Mayank would have been in action for Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, and Kings XI Punjab respectively, had the Indian Premier League (IPL) commenced from March 29. However, the tournament was suspended indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

New Delhi, Mar 1: Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif on Sunday heaped praise on Ravindra Jadeja after the all-rounder took a spectacular catch on the second day of the Christchurch Test against New Zealand.

Jadeja grabbed a one-handed stunner at deep square leg in the 72nd over to dismiss Neil Wagner, who had to depart after scoring 21 runs.

"Sir Jadeja for a reason! Jadeja Airlines, flying high! Terrific stuff," Kaif tweeted.

In the match, Jadeja also impressed with the ball. The left-handed bowler took two wickets while giving away 22 runs.

On day two, India bundled out New Zealand on 235 runs in the second Test. However, in their second innings, Indian batsmen again struggled to tackle the New Zealand pacers and lost six wickets with a lead of just 97 runs.

India went to stumps at 90/6, with Trent Boult doing the majority of the damage with three wickets.

New Delhi, Feb 9: The Indian Fed Cup team will travel to Dubai for this year's competition as the ITF has named the desert city as the new venue for the matches, to be held from March 3 to 7.

The ITF named the new venue after moving out the matches from then Chinese city of Dongguan due to Coronoavirus threat. The Asia/Oceania Group I matches were originally scheduled to be played from February 4-8.

"The event will be held in the week following the ATP Dubai tournament at the same venue, and will see six nations China P.R., Chinese Taipei, India, Indonesia, Korea Rep. and Uzbekistan - compete for a place in the Fed Cup Play-offs in April," an ITF release said.

The six teams will vie for two spots in Fed Cup Play-offs.

"Being in Dubai makes no difference. But the dates give enough time to Sania for her recovery. Doubles is an important point. Ankita is playing well. The other team members will also get some tournament to play under their belt," India's Fed Cup captain Vishal Uppal told news agency.

Sania's participation was under doubt due to a calf injury she aggravated during the Australian Open, where she pulled out of the mixed doubles before retiring mid-way into her women's doubles opening round match.

"I think we have a good chance but we will have to be at our best and fight hard for every point, every game, every set, every match," Uppal added.
